Description
A way outside the box idea but more just for fun. I've broken the LA trade into two parts although it could easily (and more likely would) be one trade were it happen (in the alternate cap friendly universe). As one trade it balances better with a bit of give and take in the player values. Highly unlikely to happen but there is 'some logic' to it. Cap being over slightly isn't an issue as the trades would likely be late/TDL to make it work, and assumes a certain amount has been accrued. There are a LOT of assumptions made!!! I'm ready for the burn. LOL!
Trades
1.
COL
  1. Danault, Phillip
Additional Details:
If the Avs are looking to go deep then serious depth at centre can't hurt. Danault's strengths defensively and in the face off circle answer a couple of areas of need for the Avs. Danault also answers a problem for next year. Locked up long term he can fill a void left by Kadri, and work in tandem with Newhook as 2C while Newhook develops. Just as with LA though it potentially leaves a hole, this time on D, and would really have to assume Byram is back and fully fit to work.
LAK
  1. Girard, Samuel
Additional Details:
LA have been consistently linked with a search for a 'dynamic LHD' since last year. Sammy G definitely fits that description, and there's no question the Kings would be in on him if the price was right, but giving up Danault after just signing him is unlikely. However, if the Kings drop out of the running this year would they potentially go with the veteran Kopitar as 2C and give Byfield a shot at taking the role he's heading for anyway, and look to Vilardi to eventually develop into the 2C?
2.
COL
  1. Athanasiou, Andreas
Additional Details:
The Avs make a cap saving in the cheaper Athanasiou. He fits the Avlanche speedster style, and I'm surprised they haven't taken a look at him in the past, as reclamation projects have been popular in Colorado. Obviously dependent on his returning from injury.
LAK
  1. Compher, J.T.
Additional Details:
Compher seems to be regarded by many as a cap dump after a poor season last year. Whilst the Avs make some cap room in this trade, JTC is a useful guy, though more a jack of all trades type player. His cap hit only looks as bad as it does due to the covid cap era.
3.
COL
  1. Gudbranson, Erik
Additional Details:
I like the idea of adding Gudbranson for physicality in the play offs. The Avs could go with playing Jack Johnson on the right as a RHD but he usually plays LD, so I decided to look at picking up a decent option to fill the right side role as JJ is better suited to the 7th D role at this point.
CGY
  1. 2022 3rd round pick (COL)
Additional Details:
This assumes that Calgary is out of the race and you can really insert your choice of right sided third pairing D in here. Calgary get a decent pick for an expiring contract if they're out of the race.

Can we all please stop trading Girard for older players? Like, everyone on this site please sign an agreement? Because it really makes zero sense for COL to move Girard. Danault just signed an extension with LAK, I can't see him wanting to move so quickly, even if it is Colorado. He also doesn't want to be a 3C, that was his big issue in MTL. Byram has concussion symptoms and nobody knows when he'll be back to 100%, they really can't afford to move anyone on the back end. If anything, I think they may look into adding defensemen at the deadline.

Calgary will be keeping Gudbranson for their own cup run. Assuming they fall ot is quite a stretch when they have 6-7 games in hand on the 4 teams in front of them and 3 of them are within 3 points

I wanted Danault in the off-season but it would be stupid to trade for him at this price when we could have had him in UFA. Bad look for LA to trade a player who just committed to them as a free agent.

Firstly, no, I don't think anyone should stop. It's perfectly feasible to trade an older player for a younger one y'know? Not outside the bounds of reality. It does happen. The question is whether it's a relatively reasonable idea (i.e. not one for one for Carey Price). If you'd read any of the actual trade idea you would know it relied on certain assumptions and your points were already addressed, bar the falacious 3C argument. Danault himself never mentioned the 3C role directly as far as I can remember, but rather how he was utilised, and in Colorado it would be similar to how LA looks to use him. To shelter Newhook in a similar fashion to Byfield. By the time he reaches the end of his current contract there is no way he will still be a 2C if he's in LA and Byfield and Vilardi have developed correctly. The rest I won't bother re-writing here.
