Not so fast. That deal doesn't work at all.

1. The Oilers can't trade their 2022 2nd round pick until they are certain the conditions of the Duncan Keith trade have not been triggered, and that probably isn't going to happen until after the TDL.
2. Even at 50% retained salary, acquiring Phil Kessel puts the Oilers well over the salary cap.

Aside from those two issues, Niemelainen is a very solid prospect who played quite well during his call up. His physicality is noticeable, he skates very well for a big man, and he has proven to be capable of playing either side of the ice at the NHL level. I think its quite possible that he could be a regular in the 6-7 d-man role next season.

Carolina pass and hard. Carolina don't need to move Gardiner, he's an LTIR retirement. They're not going to give up assets to do it.
