I get the idea of 1st round picks, but look what Boston did a few years back with their three. I think you're better off asking for prospects. At least you know what you're getting and you can see how they've progressed.

I think the idea that Petry plus a cap dump gets you the fifth overall pick in this year's draft because van Riemsdyk is a bigger cap dump is over-reaching, especially in light of the retention.

That's probably the right value for the San Jose trade, but I think that the Sharks are in a position to prefer quality to quantity. That might be a deal which would appeal to a team like Arizona that needs everything, but San Jose would probably have a specific player in mind at #11.

San Jose declines. We have EK65, Burns, and R. Merkley so we don’t need to spend more on good RD.
