Description
Trading Toews because they can't afford to re-sign him. It could be to any team that needs a 1D but the return makes sense to me because it's a low 1st and the prospect is one they can afford to lose even though he looks like a guy that can reliably play in the bottom pair so they aren't taking on a lot of cap in this scenario. It's probably true they could try to get more, maybe a younger C that could fit into the 4th line role I put Bjugstad in here instead of the 2nd.

This all assumes, of course, that Newhook can at least hold down that 2C role competently. It could be argued that both he and Byram, should they have good seasons, could ask for a bit more on bridges but they're just waiting for the cap to go up and pad their stats before the cap goes up dramatically. Also, Olausson has to show he can be a viable middle-six guy playing against men.

There are a lot of little tweaks that could be made but this feels like a viable roster.

Why would MTL, who expect to be a bottom 10 team, would trade quality future assets for 1 year for Devon Toews ? Tell me how it makes senses from a Habs perspective

Yeah, probably. But if I add more, someone will come here and tell me that it's way too much, lol. Personally, I think a 1st, a 2nd and two solid prospects is a good return and a fair price for Toews (with either a new deal in place or a guarantee of him re-signing) but some genius is sure to bring up "but he only cost two 2nd's" as though that's how it works.

Right on cue...

Imagine he comes with the guarantee of re-signing; does that help? Not many quicker ways to get out of the bottom 10 than by adding a legit 1D.
