Description
Confirmed out:
Price-Season
Byron-Christmas(mimimum repeat injury same timetable as last year)
Eddy-Christmas (minimum repeat injury same timetable as last year)

That leaves MTL roughly 8.1m according to Capfriendly
Perfect storm to take advantage of VGK desire to move Karlsson.
Karlsson > Evans but plays the same role for too much to justify paying on contender.
5.9m for a player who's declined 5 straight years but his worst was better then Evans Best
Its a Gamble for sure but what if he turns it around and spends the next 5 years producing?

Either way both teams get what they need without giving up much.
VGK clears 5.9m x 5 year deal off the books for a much more managable 1.7 x 3 year deal.
With Eichel and Marchessault on top 6 Evans fits nicely behind them as a bulk faceoffs defensive Center. It not only makes them cap compliant but gives them money to finally sign Hague who reports say left VGK for Ontario after contract talks broke down showing they're not close on a number likely due to limitations cap wise.

I dont think MTL does this for 1 fo 1 simply because of the Term
I also dont think MTL is looking for anymore players just NHL ready players.
Nolan Patrick how ever injury prone he is still holds value
Jesse Ylonen dubbed Lehkonen Lite in Laval played with mini Gallagher RHP to help take them to a ECF with Primeau last year. His offense suits his style of play given how little time he gets in the OZ he does well creating offense for himself. Much like Lehkonen and his Dad he projects to be a middle 6 main stay who plays a game revolved around back checking and gaining possession back largely in odd man situations.

While Patrick >Ylonen i have little doubt Ylonen's Career>Patrick's sadly.
The hope is in taking him rehabing him like NJD did Coleman for almsot 2 years that he'll rebound

Karlsson>Evans on paper but 5 year decline vs cap hit put him to make more and produce less then Evans.
Its the Cheapest and easiest way for VGK to become cap compliant without losing squat and gaining caphit of 4.2m a year over 5 years back

Why Karlsson on Top 6 LW?
Dach will need faceoff support as he'll get waived out a lot just like Suzuki did at first.
Karlsson can help him transition then when Dach's ready take 3rd line Center.
Regardless we'll get more value out of him over 3 years then Evans offensively.
We can always sell him in his final years retaining salary to get a better yield.
Worst Case Scenario he declines on continued path becoming a Monahan type bulk faceoffs guy /mentor
Trades
MTL
  1. Karlsson, William
  2. Patrick, Nolan
Additional Details:
VGK clears 4.2m a year for 5 years
They become Cap Compliant & Can afford to sign Hague now

Swapping of 3rd line Centers see's a production dip today but in Karlsson's consistent 5 year decline he's projected to produce less then Evans regardless. Its simply unlikely he turns it around in VGK

That additional cap also means no being forced to give away Reigning Vezina Trophy Winners or Point Per Game Forwards for nothing or worse paying to lose them because of cap issues.

Ylonen for Patrick gives VGK a Middle 6 winger ready now with no injury history having a great camp. Patrick>Ylonen skill wise but Ylonen Career>Patrick's Career of that i have no doubt as he has not injury issues or excuse's just results.
VGK
  1. Evans, Jake
  2. Ylönen, Jesse
Additional Details:
MTL takes on a big contract for sure but during the rebuild he's actually kind of ideal despite the cap hit being heavy. Serves a similar role to what Tatar did for us as a Goal Scoring depth leader who simply needs a change of scenary

While i dont think Karlsson will ever break 50pts again i do see him as a productive 35-45pts scorer and 3rd line bulk faceoffs center similar to Eller's role or maybe Bozak

Patrick is mostly cause we dont have room for Ylonen sadly and even if we made room with all the overachieving youth we'd just be having this discussion next year. Patrick we rehab 1-2 years if needed with no real issues with him sitting out in hopes when he returns healthy he'll play like the former 1st OA selection he was projected to be for years.(i'd call it 90/1 odds)

In my humble opinion, this would be detrimental to the Habs rebuild but aside from all that though, this would be a terrible trade to make outright. IMHO your own logic in the description is reason why the habs SHOULDN'T do this. If there ever was a forcing a round peg into a square hole situation, this is it. The Habs can accomplish what your description is trying show for a fraction of the cost.

Doesn’t make sense for MTL at all …
Ylönen is waivers exempt, he’s going back in the AHL
I rather have Evans centering the 4th line than taking on Karlsson contract

For a rebuilding team, Montréal has little long-term cap flexibility because of the amount of money tied up in their middle-of-the-lineup players. Not only they're doomed to operate in LTIR for the next 4 years, they already have Matheson, Armia, Gallagher, Anderson, Savard, Dvorak, and Allen under contract for the next 3+ years and some of them will outlast Slafkovsky, Guhle + the 2023 pick's ELCs. They just shouldn't be adding more top dollars and long-term commitments to players that aren't top-of-the-lineup players.
