Description
With Marchand, McAvoy, and Grzelcyk on the LTIR to begin the season, the cap is not an issue for the Bruins. However, it becomes one as all three get healthy, assuming no one else is on the LTIR. The Bs cannot carry a 23-man roster that includes those three and stay under the cap without making a trade - even if the likes of Foligno, Nosek, and Wagner are all buried in the AHL as a means to activate the LTIR group. It is possible that one of those three is claimed and that would solve the cap problem, but why wait and hope?

The Canucks are looking to move the contract of Michael Ferland, who is no longer healthy enough to play, and are willing to give up more to move him. Seeing as the Bruins are already going to be in the LTIR to begin the season, it makes a ton of sense to add Ferland for free. This would allow the Bs to go over the cap by Ferland's $3.5MM all season. Not only would that allow the team to avoid risking Nosek on waivers, but they could even keep Foligno on board without going over. Or in my opinion, you still send Foligno to the minors and give guys like McLaughlin, Steen, and Lysell some looks over the course of the year and then use the extra Ferland space to add at the deadline. With the roster below, the Bruins could send McLaughlin down (no waivers necessary) at the deadline and add a forward worth up to $3.55MM. The Bruins will be hard pressed to accumulate that amount otherwise. Seems well worth taking on Ferland's salary. No brainer in my opinion.

Doubt the Canucks add a 2nd to move Ferland. If it costs that much it makes more sense to keep him and stash him on LTIR ourselves

Canucks won't add a 2nd to dump an LTIR contract with how weak our prospect pool is

So here’s the report from Seravelli. He said they are looking to move on from his contract due to other teams having injuries and not having cap space and looking for that cap flexibility. (So it just sounds like Vancouver is trying to take advantage of teams in cap crunches here). The only thing there is to that is Ferland is owed $2.75M in cash which would be the only reason Vancouver would have to pay a little bit to a team to take his contract but at the same time it may not cost anything at all.
