You're drunk if you think NJ is getting Meier with a late first and " a few smaller pieces" . Sj is easily getting Holtz, 1st and a couple more pieces.

He's RFA and if not traded, he will be signed. He loves SJ and has already voiced his desire to stay.

You can certainly take the risk into the summer that he wants to be there long term....or he takes that $10m QO and gets himself to UFA knowing he pretty much would get whatever SJS offers.

It brings up the point though, that is Meier on a term deal the best thing for the team? Would they be better off with pieces.

I personally believe you will get a late 1st, and more quantity of B prospects than maybe an A as I truly don't know who is in the market for Meier that would be able to sign him to term after the trade. I can't imagine many teams want to make that trade knowing they can't.
