Description
There seems to be a decent amount of decent defensemen as well as some elite ones available for trade, as well as a lot in this years FA class.

The Oilers desperately need an upgrade on D, and I think that they need an LD at the TDL, and then an upgrade/cheaper option for Barrie on RD.

I ranked these options by how much I want the Oilers to pursue them based on:
- h=How good they are
- How well they fit the Oilers' needs
- How much it would take to trade for them (if applicable)
- Contract (or predicted contract if applicable)

Ideally, with cap space and amount of trade pieces in mind, my favourite scenarios would be (assuming we can dump Barrie somewhere):
1. Trade for Chychrun, sign Mayfield/Johnson
2. Trade for and extend Gavrikov, sign Mayfield
3. Sign Soucy, trade for one of Roy/Walker/Demelo
Trades
1.
EDM
  1. Chychrun, Jakob
Additional Details:
Would be the ideal choice. Term and AAV are very good value for someone of his caliber. Trade would take a lot though.
ARI
2.
EDM
  1. Reilly, Mike
Additional Details:
A low value dman that could play bottom pair, ideally another contract goes back. Wouldn't take a lot in a trade
BOS
3.
EDM
  1. Kylington, Oliver
Additional Details:
Not completely sure what the deal is with Kylington, but if Calgary is moving on from him we should be jumping at that opportunity. Probably unlikely because the Flames and Oilers are in the same division.
CGY
4.
EDM
  1. McCabe, Jake
  2. Murphy, Connor
Additional Details:
Two decent bottom 4 dmen on a bad team, pretty realistic for Chicago and Edmonton to make a trade for one of them. I'd rather McCabe.
CHI
5.
EDM
  1. Johnson, Erik
Additional Details:
More of a FA target, could be a good bottom pairing Barrie replacement at RD if we trade Barrie.
COL
6.
EDM
  1. Gavrikov, Vladislav
Additional Details:
Good defensive dman on a bad team, ideal trade target for EDM, but could cost quite a bit and comes with some uncertainty of resigning. Could also target him in FA.
CBJ
7.
EDM
  1. Roy, Matt
  2. Walker, Sean
Additional Details:
One of them could be decent RD as a cheaper replacement to Barrie if he is traded.
LAK
8.
EDM
  1. Edmundson, Joel
  2. Savard, David
Additional Details:
Edmundson could be a good addition to the Oilers D, which needs an LD. Savard is probably the lesser option, but again could be a decent replacement for Barrie.
MTL
9.
EDM
  1. Severson, Damon
Additional Details:
Probably the best RD option, a trade would cost a lot, and a signing could also be quite expensive. If the oilers don't get a quality LD, Severson would be a very good option if Barrie is traded.
NJD
10.
EDM
  1. Mayfield, Scott
Additional Details:
Underrated option in FA if Barrie is traded, doubt a trade happens for him this season though, because Barrie would need to either go back the other way in a RD trade (doubt NYI want him) or in a seperate deal (unlikely).
NYI
11.
EDM
  1. Provorov, Ivan
Additional Details:
Unlikely, but could turn his play around in EDM, might be a good buy low candidate. High salary makes it hard to take that risk though.
PHI
12.
EDM
  1. Dumoulin, Brian
Additional Details:
Decent LD FA option, trade very unlikely
PIT
13.
EDM
  1. Soucy, Carson
Additional Details:
Very good LD FA option, shouldn't be insanely expensive.
SEA
14.
EDM
  1. Mikkola, Niko
Additional Details:
Decent bottom pair LD FA option
STL
15.
EDM
  1. Orlov, Dmitry
Additional Details:
Good LD FA option, probably resigns in WSH though
WSH
16.
EDM
  1. DeMelo, Dylan
Additional Details:
Probably won't get traded, but if WPG wanted to, EDM should go for him.
WPG
17.
EDM
  1. Klingberg, John
Additional Details:
I wasn't initially going to include Klingberg on this post because the Oilers don't need another good offensive Dman that is bad defensively, but he has been in lots of trade rumours so I added him.

Assuming you guys don't miraculously shed a couple of bad contracts this offseason, you guys are at $75.225 mil/$83.5 with 16 players signed so far...Again, just an assumption, but guessing Bouchard is something close to Dobson's 3 x $4 mil bridge, leaving under $4 mil to fix the issue.

Obviously, disappearing Barrie would be quite helpful, but I just don't see it.

I highly doubt that Matt Roy is available, but Sean Durzi and Jordan Spence as well as Sean Walker should be available. What about Spence for Philip Broberg?

I think there are maybe 3 teams that EJ would play for besides COL and no Canadian team makes the list.
