Description
All stats at even strength

High danger scoring chances against

Romanov: on for 239 high danger chances against in 1019 min TOI

Aho: on for 155 high danger chances against in 855 min TOI

expected goals against per 60

Romanov : 3.13 xGA/60.

Aho: 2.45 xGA/60

With Romanov on the ice, the isles give up significantly more defensively than with Aho on the ice.

Zone starts:

Over 70% of both Aho and Romanov zone starts are either on the fly or in the offensive zone. Romanov starts in the defensive zone at even strength 10.6% of the time , Aho 7.3% . Not a significant difference.

Defensive zone giveaways:

Romanov: 34

Aho: 13

yes, you read that right. Romanov does get more ice time, but even if you broke it down into per 60 rates, Romanov would still have at least double the defensive zone giveaways per 60.

This season, besides hitting (which has cost the isles because it takes Romanov out of position) there is nothing Romanov does better than Aho.

Offense: Aho
Defense: Aho
Puck Moving: Aho
Puck battle wins: Aho
Shooting: Aho
Passing: Aho

Romanov is still young and could improve, but right now hes a mediocre 3rd pair D at best and Aho is filling the Toews role very well as a good two way puck moving D.

Every year the players with most giveaways, are usually the "best" players. They are given puck handling responsibilities. So, I wouldn't say giveaways (or hits) are a measure of players effectiveness.
Now you might be correct that Aho is better than Romanov.

I agree with you on that, im specifically talking about defensive zone giveaways though. I feel like most of the best players are giving the puck up in transition or in the offensive zone trying to make a high end play.

Aho has certainly taken a big jump this season. I have been very impressed. But I need to see him repeat this again next year. Toews came up was great immediately. Eye test and analytics. Aho has been very average until this season. Above average offense, below average to average defense. Just need to see him maintain this growth. Luckily tho, Lou will trade him for two 2nds this offseason and he will turn into a 60 point guy!

You can’t compare Aho to Toews in anyway shape or form.

It was hard to evaluate Aho last season because he rarely played and if he did it was with chara or Greene. When Aho was called up in 2018 he was solid for those 20+ games. Who knows if he can sustain this next season but as of tight now he's been playing like the isles best two way D and thats what matters. He isn't sheltered and he still puts up great results, both in terms of points and underlying numbers.
