Really? This doesn't look that bad to me, think I'd do it.

Why would either team do this? WPG is not heading in a direction that they should give up their next 3 firsts. Fantilli would instantly put Buffalo into contention in the next year or two while their D grows. Just a strange trade.

It is unlikely the Sabres will mover up to 2nd OA, or the Jets would make this trade, buuttt there is more to the wisdom of this trade than first meets the eye.
First the Sabres would get RHD Poink, but the Jets pick right now would be 19th OA, just about the spot that 6' 2" RD David Reinbacher is expected to fall.
So the Sabres pass on adding to their forward depth, add RHD and two more first round picks in the future.
As a Sabre fan sign me up.

Buffalo doesn't need Fantilli whatsoever. They have their top two centers locked up and have multiple elite center prospects (Kulich who will likely play wing, Ostlund, and Savoie). The last thing the Sabres need is youth. Stanley cup teams aren't built from a purely young team but instead the incorporation of veterans to the youth or vice versa. Buffalo has absolutely no need for Fantilli but instead get loads of value as well as filling needs to build a compete now team
