Don't understand the logic in your narrative. Both Caulfied and LAF can be UFAs in four years. Doubt if Rangers can trade for Caulfield due to his likely high cap on his new contract.

I think Cole wants to stay. This is all gamesmanship to get the best deal. He will not get signed until after the draft lottery. If we win the lottery his price comes down if we lose the lottery his price goes up.

He'll sign after the lottery and after Kent gets back from scouting in Europe.
