Forget who exactly said it -- I think it was Pronman -- but that if a team didn't take any Russians last year chances are they won't this year. MTL is one of those teams. There's also been a lot of chatter that Michkov is going to fall out of the top 5. WSH jumps MTL, AZ, and PHI to get Michkov, MTL still guarantees themselves one of Dvorsky, Benson, Reinbacher. They also pick up 40oa and Suzdalev, who was picked 70oa last year but has since put up an incredible rookie season in the WHL where he was 8th in the league in scoring. The last time someone moved into the top 5 was in 2008 which is forever ago, but in that deal TOR sent 7, 37, and 68 to NYI for 5 so I tried to model it off of that.

For the rest of the team, they have to move on from Kuzy and Mantha even if it means eating money to do so. Bertuzzi gets too much money and term but is really the only UFA forward that's worthwhile. Sharangovich can play a supporting role and is younger. De Haan can be replaced by any vet min D, preferably a righty. Frank, Malenstyn, and Snively battle for the 13f spot, I think Snively has the edge.

For the lines, Strome has to be with Ovechkin. I would prefer to keep Backstrom and Oshie in a more sheltered 3rd line role, but these 2nd and 3rd lines would have pretty even ice time at 5v5 if I was coaching. Gus and Carlson worked so well together last year that you try to see if Sandin can recreate the magic, but I wouldn't hesitate to try any of the 3ld up next to him. Jensen and Fehervary seem to have nice chemistry as well, TVR is so solid and can also play with anyone.

The biggest questions are if Bertuzzi can actually be a good top line forward and if McMichael is ready to handle middle 6 center minutes. If he isn't, you could also run
Ovi-Strome-Wilson
Milano-Backstrom-Bertuzzi
Sharangovich-Protas-Oshie
Snively-Dowd-NAK
which is far from ideal but maybe a little less scary for a coach.

I'm down to move up to grab Michkov but that's too much. Remove Suzdalev.

I'm really happy with Suzdalev and he seems like he has a professional future but you have to give to get, I feel like its a fair price given both the precedents set for moving up and the specifics of this draft

Would MTL trade down 3 spots if Will Smith is taken and Michkov is still available? IMO yes.
Is a big fast LW prospect what MTL need? 100% yes

Good job!

Ahaha ! I just posted a similar ACGM scenario.

I don't know a lot about Suzdalev, but seems intriguing enough for me to consider it. If the Habs are really not ready to take Michkov, this is the type of move I'd like them to make, rather than just reach for Dvorsky or Reinbacher at #5.

Then pass. Sounds like Michkov is dropping. If MTL isn't taken him then ARI definitely isn't. Doubt PHI does as well.
