I don't know why, but this feels like a very strong possibility if Zibanejad would waive. There's no drop in scoring for the Leafs and the reduced cap hit allows them to continue to address their roster. A former 1st overall pick whose producing well but not as well as hoped and a 1st? I think both sides say no here....
TOR for sure will want more- even though getting a heck of a C and a player who has under performed his draft slot yet still looks to be able to break out in the right situation.
And NYR should have learned (from TOR) that too many 11M guys on a roster doesn't guarantee anything except limiting the team's options going forward. Oh- and Mathews in for a big raise after next year...no thanks.

Yeah, looks like a good fit until you consider Matthews, Kakko, Lindgren, and Schneider all need raises.

I don't see it happening without Panarin getting dealt somewhere.

None of those raises are going to jump. With the cap expected to jump up next year, it seems like a decent enough fit....
