If it costs so much to offload Granlund, suggesting that he's bad, why would a competitive team then use him as their second line centre.

This would be a buy-low proposition on a camp dump from Pitt in hopes Granny could rebound. Granlund has had some good years and is not terribly old but I imagine the Pens would be happy to get rid of his contract.

He would be a very good 3C and if they're only paying him $3.25M, the price is right

I like this trade if it gets newhook up on the 2nd line instead of Drouin and granlund is down at the 3C.

Newhook has shown more flashes of brilliance on the wing with better linemates imo - that Newhook/JT Compher/Burakovsky 3rd line was pretty dope in 21/22. Pairing him with good 2C he can learn from (hello, RoR) and Nuke is a terrifying line combo imo.
