Flames finally get the hint and initiate a rebuild. With Kadri, Huberdeau, and Weegar all signed, getting things done sooner, rather than a long tear down and repeated high picks, is the plan. The goal here is to amass first round picks and prospects in exchange for expiring players. Some contracts were taken back to acquire more assets. Cap retention on Backlund, Toffoli, Lindholm, or Hanifin would be available for sweeteners. The prospects picked generally had to have two things in common: skill with size, as the Flames have suggested that is a priority. These trades give the Flames the 14th, 15th, 16th, and 27th picks in this draft. The Edmonton trade was to acquire a younger player, but isn't necessary.
