Description
If Swayman and Frederic both come in at their midpoints, the Bs will be in trouble with getting to a 23-man roster under the cap, especially if they want to upgrade the forward group too. One potential way to do both:

1. Trade for a cheap defenseman likely to be lost of waivers. A team with cap space might prefer to get something rather than nothing even if they have to retain salary. There are a few options, but I went with McIsaac. Uphill battle to make the Wings and is no longer waiver-exempt.

2. Invite a UFA to camp and give him a minimum deal (with bonuses if applicable). Still an outrageous amount of options out there. I went with Bailey for the veteran presence and something to prove, but strongly considered Kessel, Parise, Staal, Brassard, Stastny, Suter, and Comtois. Any of them would bolster this forward corps and provide some lineup flexibility.

McIsaac isn't really special. At least not enough to trade a potential bottom-6 F and another pick. Most importantly, let's just take care of our own cheap defensemen who could be lost on waivers (Mitchell, Walsh and Regula) and all three have been better than McIsaac recently.

Personally, I prefer a young player with upside over a declining veteran in Bailey. Beecher isn't ready.

Wings pass. This is an AHL deal. McIssac offers guidance to the up and coming Defence in GR. Steen won't help GR much. And we would definitely not retain on McIssac.

Detroit doesn't want Steen. Keep him.

A third line of JVR, Geekie, and Bailey may be the worst 4th line in the NHL. Bruins needs to find a way to get a 1C or 2C to shift Coyle down to 3C. Otherwise, this forward group has no depth.

Detroit is not going to use a valuable retention slot on an AHL player with a fully buryable contract.
