1.
PIT
  1. Martin, Spencer
  2. Pearson, Tanner ($1,450,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Retention on Pearson means PITT's doesnt add any additional cap.
Martin is waiver exempt so he wont count against the cap when in the AHL, but he also gives PIT a 3rd G option that they won't have to worry about being claimed off waivers.
2.
VAN
  1. Sturm, Nico ($500,000 retained)
SJS
  1. Höglander, Nils
  2. 2024 4th round pick (NJD)
Additional Details:
I feel SJ is getting the player with higher upside here and is obviously much younger.
4th is added to balance cost of retention of 5ook for two seasons.

Why would we worry any less about Martin getting claimed off waivers than DeSmith? If anything I’d say it’s more likely Martin does get claimed than DeSmith just due to cap hits of the goalies.

I agree with you. When I posted I thought Martin was wavier exempt, however after double checking I was mistaken.

Sharks really like Sturm and Hoglander us undersized and doesn’t fit what Grier wants. Don’t see them retaining half a mil and locking up their likely last retention spot for 2 years. Just doesn’t make sense to do that with such little money

Out of curiosity, what is it Grier wants? Hoglander is only 22 and his career high in points is higher than Strums, and he achieved that is only 56 games. He may be a smaller player but he's a bit of a bulldog, plays hard and lays the odd big hit and is a well liked teammate.
