Description
Thought this was going to be another ACGM about a Nylander-to-Seattle trade? Think again. I believe the Kraken are pretty much done with their offseason activity; if Ron Francis and co. were actually considering a deal for Nylander, we would have heard something about it by now. At this point I don't really see a trade sending Nylander to Seattle working out. Nylander is a very gifted offensive talent, no question. But he's a rental until proven otherwise, and wants $10M annually on his next deal. For any team acquiring Nylander, they'd be giving up premium assets and would likely have to extend him long term at an eight figure cap hit or watch him walk for nothing next offseason. For an offense-first player who only just started averaging over a point per game this past season, I'm not convinced right now that Nylander would be worth that contract deep into his thirties, even with the cap increase. Not to mention, Toronto would likely want good current NHLers in return for Willy, since they're still looking to compete. Add all that up, and I don't think a Nylander trade would be realistic for the Kraken. They have a good offense thanks to their forward depth, and the roster pieces Toronto would target in a trade return (players like Dunn, Larsson, or McCann) are vital to the current Seattle team and would be virtually impossible to replace at this stage. Nylander would definitely be a nice addition to the Kraken, but not at the current price tag. He might make sense for Seattle as a potential free agent target next offseason, but not as a trade target.

As for the trade I actually put in this ACGM, this is mostly about solving a potential roster crunch. I don't believe the Kraken will carry 8 defenseman again this season, and if that's the case, one of Megna or Fleury would need to be waived. Personally I would much rather the Kraken keep Fleury as the 7th defenseman, as he's younger, plays the right hand side, and turned in solid performances when called upon. However, there's a solid chance Megna would get claimed if placed on waivers, so if this is the route the team takes, I'd prefer if Seattle could get a return for Megna in a trade instead of risking losing him for nothing on waivers.

As always, thoughts and helpful feedback is appreciated! Cheers!

Megna's below minimum cap hit for this year may be useful to a team like the Leafs who could use all the cheap depth they can get.

Yep, Leafs might have to make a trade like this to have 7 capable Dmen in their system.

But how can this trade happen without an extension??????laugh

Nice thought on the trade and your analysis.

Ok that all makes a ton of sense but the Leafs will accept only on one condition which is you have to include Larsson and tolvanen and take Nylander in the deal, he has given his word he will sign with Seattle just iron out the details. Thank you.

It's the 300,000 saving over Timmins that might be needed. Timmins needs waivers, and could be claimed. Doubt if Niemela is NHL ready...but he sure is needed in 24/25
