As a straight up trade Vrana is worth a 2nd at best right now, maybe a 3rd, so I think a 2nd for just the little retention doesn't require any extras. but I added a 6th.
Here's the progression...
Pens acquire a 4th for POJ from whichever team.
Pens trade a 2nd and 6th to STL for Vrana and 625K retained.
Pens use a 3rd team, flip the 4th from the POJ for them to retain 50% on Vrana.
So realize the cap would work with his final cap-hit is $1M, so the Pens would be compliant.
You wouldn't be able to do double retention on Vrana this TDL- players are limited to two retentions on their contract. Detroit is already eating 50%, and the Blues are eating whatever they're eating. A third team can't get involved and retain more in that case. That's something that hurt Arizona a few years ago with Kessel at the deadline.
Best case scenario is probably that the Blues retain half and Vrana is at about 1.25. The math may work out anyway for PIttsburgh in that case by the trade deadline.

Ahh thanks for that. But yeah, the Pens can still make the math work, but shuffling things around and I'm sure there's some proration that would happen.
