Description
I think the best trade partner for MTL this trade deadline (and possibly this offseason) is the Dallas Stars. Playing in different conferences, team needs, and in general where they are in terms of competing.

I read on the Athletic mock trades for Elias Lindholm, and DAL could be a team looking to acquire him and further suggested a package of a 1st + Bourque + Steel (Huge overpay imo!). So what I'm proposing is Monahan as an alternative target, and MTL essentially focusing on acquiring Bourque. Nothing indicates that Bourque is available, but the Athletic article suggests that of DAL's 3 top prospects (Stankoven, Bourque, and Bischel), Bourque would be the most likely to move of the 3.

Cap space is a bit of an issue with DAL so I'm pulling all the stops to assist here. Retaining on Monahan 50%, and essentially swapping Jake Evans ($1.7mil aav this year and next) for Radek Faksa ($3.25mil aav this year and next).
For value, I'm throwing an extra 3rd pick to trying and further pry Bourque.

Dallas are also looking for D (RD to be specific). Savard and Matheson could be of interest to DAL, but again, cap space is an issue.

An alternative trade for Bourque I'd do is a swap with Barron. Although that we be more of an offseason trade, as it doesn't really help DAL for the playoffs this year.

Im not a stars fan so I can't necessarily attest to this perfectly but I can't imagine they would want to move Bourque for Monahan. The Lindholm package the athletic proposed is huge, but at least it would give them a mid-term 2C with a great track record as Duchene ages out, Monahan would be a nice add for them and the Habs would be able to get some value there, especially if they take Faksa as well, but I'm not sure Dallas is going to part with an upside mid 6 center prospect while 33 y/o duchene is their 2c and sam steel is their 3c. It would really limit their long-term upside IMO

What's interesting is that Monahan and Lindholm are having very similar seasons in terms of production. I'm not saying they should be worth the same (Lindholm should be worth more 100%, due to his pedigree), but from a rental perspective, it would be a lot more cost effective to go for Monahan (or Henrique) than Lindholm since they are all having similar seasons.
If DAL are willing to pay the steep premiums (Bourque + Steel + 1st) for Lindholm with the purpose of extending him. All the power to them. But should they decide to go the rental option. Monahan or Henrique seem to be the more logical choice. The big debate is what those guys can fetch on what seems to be a very limited Center market.

The only thing that hurts Monahan's value is his injury history, it's sad for him really. He is healthy now and just as productive as Lindholm. His career PPG is 0.704 which is better than Horvat 0.688, Lindholm 0.688, and even Dubois 0.669.

Monahan is easily worth Bourque, I think with retention and taking Faksa for Evans and throwing in a 3rd would be very hard for Dallas to decline.

I question if MTL really needs another RH top 6 forward. Suzuki, Caufield, Dach, Mesar are his competition for powerplay time. In the short term MTL is still stuck with Anderson, Armia, Gallagher, maybe even Ylonen. I feel the habs need a LH shooter more, someone like Barlow from WPG for example, who also should have interest in Monahan.

The more the merrier until players start solidifying their spots in the top 6. And so far imo it’s just Suzuki and Caufield for right shooting guys. As much as I like Dach and his potential, only thing he’s proven is that he’s made of glass… Mesar is still an unknown but very interesting commodity.
Habs shouldn’t stop looking to add just because they already have “quantity”…. Quantity becomes irrelevant (to a certain extent) once quality shows up.

The way Ylonen is being used, he’s probably gone soon. Armia and/or Anderson probably get traded similarly to Hoffman this offseason. Gallagher sticks around simply because he’s unmoveable.
So the still plenty of space to acquire Bourque lol
