Description

Oilers decide Nurse contract demand is not going to fit their long-term plan. Pacioretty fits a proven secondary scoring and leadership need, and is much more useful than Lucic on a fast team, for just a little higher AAV. With Habs taking on Lucic contract, Oilers gain some cap flexibility for next summer's RFA/UFA's.

Assume Pacioretty signs for 5 years at $7.25M. Edmonton is not his first choice but he sees high potential to win, and opportunity to crank scoring back up while playing with high-end centres. Reilly adds inexpensive depth and experience to left side D for Oilers with loss of Nurse.

Oilers gain some much needed cap flexibility for next summer's RFA/UFA issues (Talbot, Puljujarvi, etc.)

no interest in taking on Lucic's contract unless Alzner is going the other way. Patches for Nurse + 1st (assuming it's lottery protected) seems like a good starting point for me, MTL adding Reilly + 3rd doesn't bother me that much.

I will concede that if the 1st isn't lottery protected, I don't see EDM doing the deal period, too risky. That being said, putting a lottery protection does reduce value.
