Puljujarvi is not a bust - the guy is probably a career 2nd line winger. A little disappointing for a top-5 pick but certainly not a bust.

Maybe adding another high prospect (Bear or Benson?) and retaining some salary on Russell sweetens the pot. Ottawa will likely have better offers but it's worth a shot for a guy like Karlsson who changes your team immediately and for the next 5 years.

there are a lot of problems with this, but the simple one I see is why on earth isn't Karlsson demanding maximum term? Pretty sure he's an 8 year guy.

Puljujarvi is tracking like Rantanen, Nylander and Pastrnak.

yes he is an 8 year guy but as per the CBA rules the oilers could only offer 7 years if they offered it to him at the time of the trade.
They could wait until the trade deadline then offer him 8 years.

(iv) An SPC with a term of greater than seven (7) years, provided, however,
that a Club may sign a Player to an SPC with a term of up to eight (8)
years if that Player was on such Club's Reserve List as of and since the
most recent Trade Deadline. With respect to potential Unrestricted Free
Agents only, the ability to re-sign a Player to an SPC of eight (8) years
expires when the Player becomes an Unrestricted Free Agent. With
respect to a Player who becomes a Group 2 Restricted Free Agent, a Club
may sign such Player to an SPC with a term of up to eight (8) years
provided such Player was on such Club's Reserve List and/or Restricted
Free Agent List as of and since the most recent Trade Deadline.

So what that means is if they trade for him, they can offer him 8 years. You have them trading for him. They can sign him to 8 years
