I like Backes more than I do Alzner but again, this trade is only compounding the problem. Barring Backes finding himself again at 34 which isn't likely, this is just adding another Alzner who costs more and has one less year but is older. Why bother? The small upgrade that could happen is marginal anyway.
Unless the Habs think they'll be needing some extra cap space any time soon, there really is no rush to buy him out or trade him for something just as bad with a higher cap. Until then just keep him as a 7th dman who can come in at any time and play defensive hockey for you. The Habs have oodles of cap space and an owner who isn't trying to cut costs at every corner. There is literally no need to do anything with Alzner unless it 100% guarantees making the team better and as bad Alzner is, he's better to have as a 7th dman than paying a good chunk of that salary for a bought out player.
Until our circumstances change or barring a trade that actually helps us, Alzner probably isn't going anywhere any time soon.
