Don't think the Leafs would match all at. Matthew isn't close to 12.5m McDavid. Isn't it ridiculous for any team to spend 16m. Gee look at Arizona cap. 1m left with a 20 man roster. So who's in cap hell?

As Sammy suggested a player still has to sign an offer sheet. Just my opinion, Matthews would prefer to play in a big market right Toronto, so in five years he can move to possible NY or LA...a big commercial market. 4m difference would be tempted, but 8 years in a non hockey market for a bad team, probably doesn't appeal to Matthews.

Player would firstly need to sign the offer sheet. And thats that. He wont.. he persuated tavares to get on team extremely hard. He is not going to be moving. Last offer sheet was 5-6yrs ago.. there is reason why

I cant see future but if I see an offer sheet for anyone I dont see Arizona going after any of the big name players. There is no way Arizona spends max $$ on Matthews or any player over 10 mil... there is a reason they are one of the lower spending team every year and has no one making more than almost 9 mil on the team. Yea, I hear people saying that once they spend on Matthews people will come and spend that money to watch him? really will they? plus just getting Matthews doesn't get you in playoffs as there is much more things that needs to be fixed with Arizona.

I mean you don't know if he would sign or not. You certainly hope he doesn't sign but unless you can tell the future you can't know for sure. Has anyone ever offered you 16 mill? I'm guessing you might consider it.

The only reason I suggested this idea was because I saw it reported on twitter and it was actually suggested by an unnamed NHL gm *allegedly*.

Just an interesting idea IMO since the leafs have publicly stated they will match any offer sheet.

I think the Leafs are in a very real danger of losing a player to an offer sheet but it won't be Matthews or Marner. Johnsson and Kapanen are targets. 1 or both will get squeezed hard after the big two get paid. At that point what do they do, trade Kadri to make Johnsson fit? Nope, they'll either see the writing on the wall and trade one of them in advance or they'll have to let them walk.

Imagine if Kapanen says, I won't accept less than 5.5 million, (assuming he scores 30 goals that isn't unreasonable). The Leafs would be very hard pressed to give him that with Marleau still around, I imagine they may have to watch one of those two guys leave.
