Simmonds+ for Nugent-Hopkins

Created by: CaptJosef
Team: 2017-18 Philadelphia Flyers
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 28, 2017
Published: Nov. 28, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Nugent-Hopkins solidifies the centre position for years to come and provides some much needed puck possession on the middle 6. Martel can keep having a shot until Lindblom is ready to come up (close in my opinion). Moving Gudas gets Morin back up, Vecchione gets a shot at being a good 2-way player.

With Frost, Rubtsov, Allison, Bunnaman, Vorobyov, Ratcliffe, and a host of others all knocking on the NHL door over the next year or two we have good forward depth on the way.

Truth is Simmonds, at 29 now and a year and a half from UFA is a high value trade piece that we should seriously consider moving.

Filppula fits in nicely as Edmontons 3rd C, Gudas gives them more, cheap, depth at the back, and Simmonds is obviously a top top player.

Simmonds alone is worth more than RNH. I would think switch Out for Puljujarvi

Wayne Simmonds is worth more than Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, let alone us trading Radko Gudas and Valteri Filppula with retained salary.

Jesse Puljujarvi would have to be included for Simmonds, among other assets.

Simmonds is a 29 year old 30 goal scorer. No doubt he's a great player but he's likely exiting his prime around the time his contract runs out, then he's gonna get paid too much for too long for his decline years.

RNH is a 24 year old centre good for similar point totals as Simmonds who is under contract for 3 more years after this. There's no way you get Puljujarvi added in the deal too. Filppula is mostly a half season throw-in to compensate for RNH. Maybe you could get a second round pick but, honestly, this is mostly Flyers bias thinking our own players are better than other teams good players.

Filppula is trash and always has been since he left Detroit and wasn't great in Detroit either. He would probably hurt Edmonton more than help. Also, acquiring RNH will immediately boost Philly's chances in going deep in playoffs with a solid pipeline of centers on the roster.

I didn't say Flyers would get Puljujarvi too, I said to substitute him for RHN. I think a more realistic trade in my opinion would based around Simmonds and Gudas for Puljujarvi + salary filler. Maybe some picks here or there depending on which side you think you think is benefiting the most

Trade away an 'ageing' star plus two players who don't have a significant future here for a younger centre to solidify our middle 6 while the rest of out forward prospects develop.

Over the past 4 years RNH and Simmonds average similar point production and goals per game.

Ah I misunderstood. In that case I don't really see the point, Puljujarvi is still an unknown quantity and RNH is a strong trade candidate as it's unlikely the Oilers want to pay their top 3 centres a comined $27m from next season. Somewhere they have to find money and a way to provide quality wingers for McDavid and Draisaitl.
