I would agree with the $10.5 million for John Tavares if the cap was say around $77 million but with the salary cap supposedly going anywhere from $78 million to possibly $83 million as soon as the 2018/2019 season i think Tavares will command more.

You're probably right - as a percentage I'd put it slightly less than what Malkin got on his latest extension which was 14.7% of the cap. (Less because of Malkin's silverware)

This logic isn't necessarily true. Tavares can't price himself out of the market either. Him asking for 13M+ for example means only a select few (maybe only 1 really) can afford him meaning he'll have effectively killed his market demand.

Tavares should ask 10.5M and not a dime more. Otherwise too many teams will drop out thus giving the few teams who maybe could afford him, more power in negotiation.

If MTL is the only team that can afford him at 13M, MB goes I can wait till he drops his demands more because no one else can afford that much anyway.
