Leafs Letang

Created by: Matthews34
Team: 2017-18 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 25, 2017
Published: Dec. 25, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is a trade that I've seen some Pens and Leafs fans have interest in.

For those Pens fans that still believe Letang is worth any of the Leafs stars (Nylander/Marner) please re-evaluate. For Leafs fans that believe Letang doesn't have value you can do the same :) I believe this deal works for both sides and fills a need.

Show the deal in 2019 and the following years when the Leafs might want/need all there cap space for other players. Why are punishing the Pens by imposing a 4 year contract with Bozak?

Why are you so concerned with cap space and paying good players fair value LOL. Letang is absolutely worth 7.25 million. If his contract was up, he would get even more. Leafs would DIE to have him. He would be the best D they’ve had since I’ve been Alive. Smart GMSs find a way to manage cap space when they have star players. Ex: don’t pay Marleau over 6 million. Don’t pay Martin over 2 million. Pens have some MASSIVE contracts yet they were still able to win back to back cups due to players on great value terms, and ELCS. That’s how you win championships. Pay your stars, and find value in your supporting cast. Bonnino was argubaly one of the best 3Cs in the NHL that made 2 million, pens found value in ELCS with sheery, rust, and guzental. Schultz made about 2 million last year and was top 10 in Norris votes. The list goes on. Pay your Stars the big bucks, and find value in supporting casts

Adam Larsson got Taylor Hall . . .

If Letang can’t get more than Bozak than GMJR should be fired on the spot.

Thanks for proving my point. Fact is the Leaf do have Marleau on a contract at 6.25m, or Martin at 2.5m and paying retention on Kessel, and you're silly tirade about not paying them is meaningless right now. And while the Pens managed to find excellent value of course in Crosby and Malkin, the Leafs may forced to pay Matthews 11m a year, which is the new going rate. So it really doesn't matter if Letang is worth 7.25m, the fact is as I suggested, the Leafs may not be able to fit him under the cap in 2019/20.

The contract can be negotiated but I've seen constant desire from Pens fans to have him extended if he was to be traded.. So that's for them. If they don't want him signed that's fine.

The Larsson/Hall deal appeared to be an outlier of a deal. Vatanen was just traded for Henrique, which is market value, so I think we could both bring in trades that suit our point but it's just best to say you don't need to heavily overpay to get a defenseman.

Also you appear to be leaving Gardiner out of your assessment. Bozak/Gardiner is a good package that fits the needs of the Pens roster. They get the perfect 3C locked up, and replace Letang with a lite version of him, aka Gardiner.

Well.. I agree as a Leafs fan the contract is tough to swallow.. And I'm not even sure I would do the above deal, lol, but it makes sense for both sides. I see lots of posters on here giving Gardiner 5.5/6+ million. So there's most of your cap space there smile

And this is the probably unrealistic way to look at it.. But with Letang's poor injury history and the Leafs sneaky LTIR tendencies they may be able to throw him on there down the road.. But I don't want to factor in that as a possibility. I think the cap would work.

The Pens would like a RD back in a Letang trade. They’d have Maatta, Dumoulin, and Gardiner on LD and Schultz plus 2 of Ruhwedel, Oleksiak, Cole, and Hunwick on RD.

Matthews34. Well anyone that wants to give Gardiner 5.5m or more has misjudged the salary cap, and certainly Gardiner's playing value. Leafs can't even afford to offer Bozak or JVR long term contracts this year IMO. Performance bonuses for this year and next year plus Horton's contract have to included, if the Leafs want to be able to maximum cap in 209/20 when then might need all the cap available.
Leafs aren't winning the Cup this year or next year even with Letang. In summer of 2019, there might be Karlsson, Doughty, OEL, McDonagh and other Dmen available as UFAs Dmen, That would be logical time to see how the team lineup is, and see how much cap there is. I really don't know why there is so much talk about Letang getting traded. For the Pens to repeat, you would think he is needed in Pittsburg.

Pens are not trading Letang but if he were to become available leafs would be all over him. They would find a way to make salary work.

Bozak is already making $4.2 million no way he signs for only $300,000 to $4.5 million i doubt he takes any thing less then 5 years $25 million.

Maybe the Wings will sign him, just like the Neilsen deal. Right now, I wouldn't sign Bozak to more than a 3 year deal. Total deal might just be 12m at most.

You're probably right Bozak is the kind of players that probably could get paid less 3 years $12 million for a #3C is pretty fair if we didn't have Helm and possibly Rasmussen coming up i could see Detroit making a pitch for Bozak but i doubt it happens Holland will be looking at expensive D like maybe John Carlson.
