An Honest Tavares Proposal

Created by: bjprice
Team: 2017-18 St. Louis Blues
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 7, 2018
Published: Jan. 7, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
For starters: I'm all for JT91 remaining in NYI.

Secondly, NYI certainly isn't out of the playoff race, although it is getting tough to pick any team above them to give them much ground, and Pittsburgh is lurking in the same position.

But reality is, until there is news otherwise, it has to be assumed that teams are asking for him. Here is what I would do as a Blues fan. Note that the roster is excluding any injuries which are expected to recover by the start of the playoffs.

The trade is structured around the highest end rentals from the past few years.

NYI receives a 1st and a 2nd, a high B level prospect, a B level RFA. Additionally NYI receives the rights to Robby Fabbri, a potential upside piece with risk. Lastly, If JT91 extends in St. Louis, then NYI receives Robert Thomas.

In this example, JT's value is roughly 2x what Kevin Shattenkirk hauled during last year's deadline.

Capfriendly shows that STL will have the deadline cap space to absorb this salary due to their LTIR relief.
Trades
NYI
  1. Barbashev, Ivan
  2. Fabbri, Robby
  3. Walman, Jake
  4. 2018 2nd round pick (STL)
  5. 2019 1st round pick (STL)
Additional Details:
Future Considerations: If JT91 resigns in St. Louis, NYI receives the rights to Robert Thomas.

It's really not a bad offer, but I'd want Tage Thompson. "B" prospects aren't enough even in a rental situation. JT is a top player in the league. Admittedly I don't know a ton about STL prospects, so feel free to remove someone. The contingency with Thomas should stay.

I don't if those are the players the Isles would want. And is now twice injured Fabbri going to recover. As an Islander, I want to players were are NHLer or near NHLers so I can sell tickets next year, not those picks. And I would "punish" St Louis for resigning Tavares, since the Isles want him back.
Kostin, Dunn and 1st. If St Louis resigns JT Thomas and Krykov are added.

No to the Thomas portion. Maybe Thompson, Barbashev, 2019 first, Fabbri if he resigns.

If I was Armstrong I'd make a good enough offer to have the right to negotiate with JT. Tell him he's going to be a blue next year, and we don't want to hurt our future in any way. So he can wait or strong arm NYI into doing a deal for cheap ( see Stanton) .

Maybe I'm just overly patient (we've already waited 50+ yrs) I'll just take him in the offseason

I don't remember any instances of conditional players. Future considerations perhaps, but I'm not sure that has ever resulted in a first round draftee being exchanged.

So if Tavares re-signs, we'll trade you Thomas for a 1st.
Or we'll give you Thomas and make the 1st conditional.
Can anyone give an example of using a conditional player to make a trade instead?

Just my personal thoughts as OP on the comments:

It would be tough to include Thompson or Kostin in any trade because they fill great needs for STL's lineup.

I'd be okay with your version of the deal.

The thing is, if JT91 is signed, then Thomas is redundant. Bergy is a highly capable 3C, Tavares is a solid 1C, and Barbashev shows the 2-way play to 2C.

I'm also cool with waiting, but a line-up with this center depth is...

I have no examples, however, future considerations is a thing. I consider myself well read on the CBA but I have no clue if what I proposed is legal.

On that note, I do not know if Fabbri can even be traded. That was just a deal sweetener anyway due to STL's LW depth. Could replace Fabbri with another B level prospect or B level RFA like Jaskin.
