McDonagh, a great hockey player, but Leafs don't need another LD, and doesn't get you Marner, PERIOD!

McDonagh and a 3rd doesn't get you close to Mitch Marner, maybe you could look at Connor Brown and a 2nd, but the Leafs aren't giving up a 20 year old with the talent to put up 70 points for McDonagh.

Why is everybody want to trade short term contracts of Dmen to the Leafs for their long term good players? Leafs are looking long term, and McDonagh, OEL, Karlsson aren't leading the Leafs to the Cup final this year or next.
Now, if Hedman is out this season, they might be looking at premier Dman to get them to the finals.

Five stars for sending Nash to Nashville. I'm still sad the Rangers never traded for Paul Ranger. Better late than never.

Then tell me what's so good about 28 year old Ryan McDonagh that warrants giving up 20 year old Mitch Marner, who's already the better player, smart guy

only if you tell me how a top pairing defender with 1,5 years at 4,7M gets a 2nd roudner and a middle 6 winger

I'd tailor back a bit and say Brown and a 1st for McDonagh is fair, that's a young 20 goal scorer and a pick in the 20's range, for a #2-ish defenseman (I'm not convinced McDonagh is a #1, not discounting he's a good defenseman though). I don't think McDonagh is worth anything near a 20 year old, 1st line player, but a young, quality NHL level player and a high pick is fair value.

now that we're talking about it hockey: McDonagh is no true #1 as you said, but as a #2 defender still a core piece while players like brown are a luxury/secondary scoring. a pick in the 20ish range is usually not worth the gamble either. when you trade away your captain and #1 dman (he is de facto the Rangers one) you need a center piece coming back or there's no deal. if you're not willign to give one up, there's none coming back.
