Very Very Very Long Montreal Mock of Fairness

Created by: FryesLeapMaine
Team: 2018-19 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 16, 2018

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is going to be difficult to follow along. The overall philosophy is to push out expiring assets and pull in overpaid dumps who can fill holes. The reason to do this is to acquire draft pick and player compensation on both ends.

THN had an article on how some certain teams turned around their fortune by having double digit draft picks for 2 or 3 years along with having a high 1st rounder.

In this mock I've tried to get Montreal some extra picks to go along with the high ones they are likely to have for the next 3 seasons. They have 10 or more picks for 3 seasons in a row and field a decent team that can compete for around 30 digit win seasons.

Montreal 2018 Draft Picks
1st Montreal #8 or so
1st Ana #27 or so
2nd Montreal #39 or so
2nd Chicago #43 or so
2nd Washington #59 or so
3rd Montreal #70 or so
3rd LA # 80 or so
3rd Nsh #87 or so
4th Ana # 112 or so
5th Mtl # 130 or so
5th Edm # 134 or so
5th LA # 144 or so

Truth time: I'm a Bruins fan and this is a Bruins style Retool like we did in 2015 where we had 6 picks inside the top 60. Montreal can't get the 3x firsts 1 year and 2x first the next like Boston had, but they can do 3x 2nds and 3x 3rds one year and then 2x 2nds and 3x 3rds the next. That amount of picks should yield atleast 3 or 4 solid contributors and by the time they are ready for the NHL; The majority of dump contracts have expired as well as the salary retention so Montreal could dip into the free agency pool big time.

This team ends up with very good forward depth and a lot of positional flexibility which is needed for Montreal management because they often become less than impressed with players performance at times. With guys on the 4th line who can skate in the top 9 it lets them maneuver the lineup until they find something that consistently works.

Additional Details:
2018 3rd round pick
LAK
    C Tomas Plekanec 3M retained

LA hasn't had Jeff Carter so Plekanec could make sense for them. Obviously they've been good anyways, but I think he's better than Torrey Mitchell and I think LA knew Plekanec wasn't available at the time they got Mitchell because MTL wanted to make the playoffs. Now that MTL is likely to miss the playoffs, LA is free to inquire about Plekanec and there is obviously an open line of communication between these 2 GM's which would create an avenue for a trade to be made.
    2.
    MTL
      2018 1st round draft pick
      2018 4th round draft pick

      RFA Nick Ritchie
      RFA Nicolas Kerdiles
      ANA
      1. Benn, Jordie
      2. Pacioretty, Max ($2,000,000 retained)
      3.
      MTL
      1. 2019 5th round pick (CBJ)
      2. 2020 6th round pick (CBJ)
      Additional Details:
Montreal bought Schlemko for a 5th, so they take a future 5th and 6th for him. It's really about collecting draft picks at this point.
      CBJ
      1. Schlemko, David
      Additional Details:
CBJ has received a trade request from Jack Johnson. If they trade him then Schlemko could make a good cheap alternative.
      4.
      MTL
      1. 2020 3rd round pick (NYI)
      NYI
      1. Fucale, Zachary
      2. McCarron, Michael
      Additional Details:
At one point in time Fucale and McCarron were worth a 1st and 2nd combined. Now they amount to a random 3rd. NYI try to reclaim Fucale's bright future and turn him into a atleast a backup within 2 or 3 years. McCarron can spend a year in the AHL with no pressure regardless of the Tavares decision. That would be good for him to have a year to just work on his skills.
      5.
      MTL
      1. 2019 4th round pick (CAR)
      2. 2020 2nd round pick (CAR)
      Additional Details:
Montreal doesn't seem to be that high on this guy. I'm assuming they'll retain and take less than what they paid for him just to recover some assets.
      CAR
      1. Shaw, Andrew ($1,900,000 retained)
      Additional Details:
Shaw would slot in as their #3 C Next season if Ryan leaves. There really isn't enough talent to go around in free agency, so this could end up being their best option if Montreal is willing to retain.
      6.
      MTL
      1. Reinhart, Griffin
      Additional Details:
Vegas has enough LHD's, they might be short on F's if Neal and Perron walk. They can afford to move this guy. Montreal tries to develop him into a legit shutdown guy.
      VGK
      1. De La Rose, Jacob
      2. Grégoire, Jeremy
      Additional Details:
Vegas gets a couple decent 3rd liner prospects to help their young forward depth. It seemed to me like they took too many defensemen in their expansion draft and still have more than they need but aren't trading them. These guys could be good for them.
      7.
      MTL
      1. Bjugstad, Nick
      2. 2019 3rd round pick (FLA)
      Additional Details:
Montreal gets rid of a guy who can't stay out of the doghouse. Bjugstad looks and plays like what I envision them thinking McCarron was going to be. They also get a decent pick which helps their Re-tool.
      FLA
      1. Galchenyuk, Alex
      Additional Details:
Florida upgrades offensively to Galchenyuk. Florida is 21st in goals, so they need a boost to make the playoffs next season.
      8.
      MTL
      1. Boedker, Mikkel
      2. 2019 2nd round pick (SJS)
      Additional Details:
      2018 5th round pick
      9.
      MTL
      1. Bogosian, Zach
      2. 2019 3rd round pick (BUF)
      Additional Details:
Bogosian is a dump. No-one would want him at this point, but Montreal has a hole at RHD and plan on re-tooling for 3 years. A 3rd round pick is enough to be paid to get a decent 3rd pair RHD who's seriously overpaid. He's still better than what they have and the next 3 years are about putting a team together that will fall below the playoff line closer to the 10th worst team in the league than the very worst team. Theres no need for top 3 picks if you get enough picks to draft solid role players around the 1st rounders.
      BUF
      1. Addison, Jeremiah
      Additional Details:
Addison is a decent prospect. I'd say he's worth a 6th right now so they are basically paying more for the right to dump Bogosian without taking any cap. IF they traded Bogosian for a guy like Boedker it wouldn't cost them anything, but for a guy with no salary who may actually become a player it's going to cost a decent pick.

i like all the NHL level stuff except the ANA trade .
move Patches to his home city for a chance to get two shots at the #1 pick
as its clear MTL and BUF are going to stay bottom 5 NHL with the west's success
leaving anyone bottom 3 of the east is bottom 5 of the league and that is us .

that being said Deslauriers-Carr is to good together to split up
Boedker just makes us worse overall

      Thank you for reading.

I Liked the Anaheim trade because of how he fit for them in their Salary structure and the fact that you could pry Nick Ritchie from them. He's going to be a 40 point scoring power forward and along with guys like Bjugstad and Hornqvist the team would turn into a group that would offer the opposition a very difficult night. As I see them now they're kinda weak kinda small and get away with scoring cheapie goals at opportune times. This mock makes them a more physical more determined squad. If I were Montreal I'd be looking into the technology to clone people and it wouldn't be for duplicating the "stars" of the team. It'd be to use on Gallagher because if you had 9 of him in the top 9 his determination would keep you from ever losing.

Galchenyuk has 16 points in his last 20 games, young and what we need I would keep him.

Your management can't help but crap on him as much as possible. How was it logical to put him on the 4th line!?!? He's a skill guy, thats just insulting.

it worked putting him on 4th line because of his drinking didnt it ?
he's back playing SOLID as he has since Coach Eller Left .

CJ's Rebuilt Chucky and before next year we could even see him become a 2 way player

      saying all that
Bjugstead is just what MTL needs plain and simple
he's young , solid and an all around player on a horrible team
who's management makes ours look godly firing VGK current coach
who 's 2nd in their division in the west .

both players benefit from the trade and both teams
althought i'd make the 3rd pick a 2nd just because Chucky is a 30 goals scorer
you know his potential and we know nicks and in the end Chucky will produce more
but nick will be the anchor we've needed

I respect the effort and thought process enough not to quibble over minor details. Biggest detail difference is that
I don't think Ritchie or Kerdiles are a sure enough or talented enough bet for a player of Pacioretty's caliber, but that's a difference in target, more so than value. I think additional picks would be less of a gamble than those two players specifically.

      I have three notable suggestions.

      1. Bergevin cannot be the one in charge for this process. He doesn't evolve or adapt quickly, and youth have generally not prospered or been put in positions to succeed during his tenure.

      2. Shaw is worth keeping through a rebuild. He's a solid and versatile player who can plug in wherever needed to support younger players. He's also still young enough himself that he can continue to be an asset until the end of his contract. He may even still bring back similar value in his final year, IF he isn't worth re-signing at that time.
He's been performing well, but I think most fans expect top 6 production out of him, when he's really a top 9 player that's only guilty of being about $500k too expensive, which is peanuts, all things considered.

      3. Montreal shot themselves (and Galchenyuk) in the foot. Trading him when his value is low is basically shooting the other foot. If someone comes looking, and is willing to overpay, it's a consideration, but that's doubtful.
Instead, use the excuse of a rebuild to loosen the reigns a bit, give him some trust and responsibility, and let him show what he can be capable of. I'd rather he washed out in Montreal, than go on to be successful elsewhere if we're only getting pennies on the dollar.

Overall, not bad. Just some things I would personally do differently.

I wouldn't do most of these trades to be honest. The return is so low we might as well stick with our own guys and be bad

Yeah, I bet you do. Habs fans don't though or at least shouldn't. We don't have a third pairing RHD, but it's not really a need and certainly not a hole to fill with Bogosian's big contract. Benn prefers to play on the right and we have Juulsen coming up
