Barrie traded to St. Louis - Read Description Before Commenting

Description
WHY COLORADO SHOULD MOVE BARRIE:
colorado has a ton of RHD prospects (makar, timmins, etc) and barrie seems like the odd one out. hes having a terrific season so i think now is the time to make a move (well maybe not RIGHT now, but once hes back from injury)

WHY ST LOUIS SHOULD WANT BARRIE:
st louis is in the playoff race in the tough central division and could use a boost. pietrangelo-parayko-barrie would give them the best combination of RHD in the league. both pietrangelo and parayko play a lot on both the power play and penalty kill. inserting barrie (a power play specialist) would improve their 29th ranked power play (only 14.5%) and would allow for pietrangelo and parayko to rest a bit more and get more 5 on 5 ice time and more short handed ice time.

CONTRACT ISSUES:
this ones pretty simple. barrie makes 5.5M for the next few seasons. bouwmeester makes 5.4M for the next couple seasons. getting rid of bouwmeester as a cap dump frees up enough room to take on barries cap hit. plus with statsny's 7M contact ending after this season st louis will have some more wiggle room

EXPLAINING TRADE VALUE: (since im an avs fan i tried to be as least biased as i could when determining trade value, if you think the value is lopsided leave a comment)

id say barrie alone is worth robert thomas (2017 1st round pick 20th overall) and a 2nd rounder*** (keep in mind barrie is a proven nhl defenseman - colorado is taking a chance on thomas and the 2nd round pick). but with bouwmeester as a 5.4M cap dump st louis would also throw in tage thompson. to compensate for lost forward depth colorado would also throw in matt nieto (on pace for approx 30-35 points which is pretty good for a depth forward).

***(since st louis doesnt have their 1st round pick in 2018, they would give colorado their 2019 2nd and 2019 4th instead of their 2018 2nd since they probably wouldnt want to be without their 1st and 2nd round picks in the same year).

also retained 500k on nieto just to be nice (his contract ends this offseason anyways)

WHAT COLORADO WOULD DO WITH BOUWMEESTER IN THE FUTURE:
ideally they would wait a year and do a pump and dump to see what they could get with him at the 2019 trade deadline. but even if he has no trade value colorado wont have any cap issues for the next couple years and they could just wait it out

OTHER:
colorado could also make more moves at the 2018 trade deadline (such as trading comeau for picks or taking cap dumps for picks). however ill leave that for another armchair gm - this one is mainly focused on a tyson barre trade

I like that you did research on the power play and I agree we need someone to run it. However, there are a few things wrong with this trade. The Blues and their fans are infatuated with Thomas. Bergeron comparisons have been thrown out, and while I believe that is stretching his potential, this kid looks legit. As you said, Stastny is coming off the books this summer and Thomas looks like he's gonna be his replacement. The Blues traded away Shattenkirk at the deadline last year because they didn't need 3 RHD making over $5 Million a year. Thompson is another guy we really like and even Bouwmeester isn't useless. Good idea, but it wouldn't work.

St.Louis just doesn’t need 3 RHD and if they did want Barrie, they’d have to pay a lot more than that

I don’t see St. Louis doing this. They already don’t have like any righties in their forward Corp and I think they are expecting Thompson and Thomas to be big parts of their team next year. Taking them both away only leaves 1 right handed shot for their forward Corp. plus it would be a waste to have Barrie as a 3rd pair defenseman. If you want a power play guy for St. Louis, they’d be better off giving up the farm for a guy like Gostisbehere than Barrie. (Yeah I know he isn’t available, just using as an example). A top 4 LHD because their left side of the defense is weak and he would help their PP immensely.

About sums it up. It isn't a bad idea but wouldn't work.
