Price Rumor Next Year

Created by: pawnjohn
Team: 2018-19 St. Louis Blues
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 24, 2018

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Working out the unlikely scenario that STL actually made an offer for Price.

Only way this happens is if they already have 1-2 trades lined up to recoup draft picks & cap space.

This still banks on the cap going up close to the upper limits being discussed (5 million)

The Blues would need to move 1 of Berglund/Sobotka and Gunnarsson.

These are the types of deals the Blues would need, not necessarily done with Pitt & Buffalo and could be done at 2018 draft instead

These two trades allow us to recoup a first and pick up an extra 2nd rounder to offset the loss of Thomas as much as possible. It also gives them the cap space to resign Stastny or another 2C and still have room to acquire another top 6 forward if none of Kyrou/Kostin/Tage are able to lock down 2RW/3RW slot

I highly doubt you will get Price for Thomas, Allen, and probably a 25-31st pick in the 1st round.
MTL would need more....way more

I wouldn't disagree, I was more looking into the implications of what it would look like if MTL accepted the Blues' initial offer. Granted with 8yr/10.5 million contract starting next year coupled with Price's NMC, if the Habs decided to start a rebuild by selling off Price, I think the price is closer than we think.

30 year old goalies who havent even started 8 year 10.4 million per year contracts will not get you big trade returns.

One of the worst contracts in nhl history and it hasn't even started yet

I can see something like this happening.

Habs get a really interesting option for their illusive top 6 center woes. Jake Allen has been serviceable - career .914, .920 in 15/16, is affordable and 27.

STL has about 3 years where they can no longer question goal-tending without really jeopardizing that group.

If the Habs were going to get anything for Carey Price, that window closes in about 16 months.

"The "worst"

Price 14% of Cap Ceiling at Date of Signing.

Toews 15.22% of Cap Ceiling at Date of Signing.
Kane 15.22% of Cap Ceiling at Date of Signing.
Malkin 14.77% of Cap Ceiling at Date of Signing.
Perry 13.41% of Cap Ceiling at Date of Signing.
Benn 13.01% of Cap Ceiling at Date of Signing.
Lundqvist 13.67% of Cap Ceiling at Date of Signing.
McDavid 16.66% of Cap Ceiling at Date of Signing.

Star players get paid, get over it."

Stop with the stupid takes of this being one of the worst contracts. Price is debatably the best goalie in the NHL and has been for years. Just because you can make outrageous comments like this, doesn't mean you have any idea what St. Louis or any other team would be willing to take on. Also, IF the Blues made this trade and won even a single Cup, its probably worth it for a team that has been around since 1968 and has nothing to show for it. Get real.

How many of those players were 31 when it started how many were goalies?

Paying goalies that much money when there is so much parity at the position is insane

Price 30

Kane 27
Toews 27
Malkin 28
Perry 28
Benn 28
Lundqvist 32
McDavid is the only outlier.... everyone else signed big money their first chance they could as UFA status approached.

Also, my list was put together in 5min, so there are other examples... But apparently 2-3 years older than the forwards and 2 years younger than the other goalie means Price's contract is "one of the worst". Right... Cap is going up, he wont even be the top paid goalie for long. IF you don't like the deal fine, but this "worst deal" is a load of crap.

Keep disagreeing. Clearly the lower end goalies like Lehner are doing equally good right?.... laugh taking a team with more talent than Montreal to multiple playoff births right?

Yes there is more parity at the position. That doesn't take away everything from the top end goalies though.

You can't just look at guys like Matt Murray and Antti Niemi, etc etc because they won cups.....look at the teams in front of them.

The stat you SHOULD be looking at is how long do elite goalies stay elite. Plenty of sites to show that data. truth is, many goalies have some of their best season in their early-mid 30's.........
If Price stays really good for a long time, whats the problem? You'd rather spend that money on things that aren't guarantees either? Take Okposo and Chad Johnson for example. Was that money better spent?

Oh but that's right you'd rather spend that money on Tavares, right? Everyone is signing Tavares apparently..... rolling eyes

No its not the worst contract in the league history. If you want a better idea of that, look no further than Buffalo's very own Matt Moulson. If that's too touchy, how about Wade Redden? Scott Gomez? Rick Dipietro, Vinny Lecavalier, etc etc etc etc etc

Unless you have a crystal ball which i know you don't, you're assumptions are baseless. Take it from a fan that watches him way more than you do, he is still really good and barring any major injuries will be really good for a long time.

I answered the two questions you asked me. Then said "this data shows that's a dumb statement". Would you rather make ridiculous comments and have no one challenge your views with logic? Doesn't really work that way in the real world bud.
