Agree, I don't see any trade for Hart that makes sense. In all honesty that's fine the habs already have there goalie in Lindgren and lots of young talent for the future in McNiven, Primeau, Fucale, and Hawkey.. plus I'm sure in any price trade they would get a goalie back who could help Lindgren make the adjustment to the starting role in the big league.
I think the position of goaltender is vastly overrated.. Yeah Price is elite (or was elite back in 2014-15 before injury anyways), but he isn't worth $10.5M I would trade that for a $4M goalie any day and use the $6.5M elsewhere (a #1C maybe?)
A valid stance, but we also know that $4M goaltending can be detrimental as well. There's a sweet spot in the middle somewhere.
Price may even have clocked in a little cheaper, and this current contract would end 2 years sooner, if it weren't for his bridge deal.
I don't think anyone would even blink if he was at $9M until he was 36 years old.
The key factor, is in the playoffs, when a goaltender has the ability to completely steal, or turn a series around. Sometimes you need that, and the best goaltenders are more likely to make it happen.
Over $10M is a precedent for goalies, so we'll have to see how it pans out and whether it becomes standard, but it's generally not a good idea to cheap out on the one guy that is on the ice for the full 60 minutes doing the most difficult job.
