Tanev, Ryan, Sheahan + Hagelin cap dump

Created by: Liamthepro
Team: 2017-18 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 16, 2018
Published: Feb. 16, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Toronto has cap room this year and next.
Pitt can really use the Hagelin cap dump for Leivo, a cheap depth winger. Bozak can work with Kessel, and they are dissatisfied with Sheahan, not a playoff calibre 3C. But TML need a 4C, and recognizing that, they re-sign him for around 2M.
Derek Ryan is better than Bozak, and can also audition for a re-signing.
Vancouver is rebuilding and can get a lot for Tanev.
Leafs lose JVR as their own 2018 rental, which seems to be the plan anyway.
Tanev and Sheahan/Ryan don't make enough in the coming years to be a cap problem.
TML trades cap room, prospects and minor picks. Gets much better at C and RD.

Wutt? Since when are the pens dissatisfied with Sheahan? The opposite actually. They are very pleased with Sheahan. And Hagelin isn’t a cap dump. Hagelin is valuable to the pens. Sure they’d prefer not to pay 4 million for him, but look at his last 15-20 games. He has been great with malkin. A cap dump would be someone like Moulson who is getting paid 5 million to play in the ahl.

Toronto would have absolutely no interest in the Pittsburgh trade in my opinion! Makes us less competitive this year, and Haglein is a contract dump, similar to Fehr last year, and while it may fit. . . the limited upside of Sheahan, doesn't fit with the plan! I see Toronto bringing in a UFA to fill a center spot in 2018, costing no assets, if only for one year! I like all of the other trade thoughts, as a Leafs fan, although I doubt Vancouver sees value in the Tanev tade! I'm of two minds on Tanev, as I do believe he is exactly the type of Dman Leafs could work into their plan, both contractually and player wise, but do see the alternative opinion that he is very injury prone. As such, if Leafs roll the dice, the type of deal, would be one like the above that won't cripple the team in terms of players and assets and future being sent if it comes back to bite them. Vancouver may be or should be also analyzing where he fits into their rebuild and would they accept something less than what they might have also based on that whether it be Leafs or someone else?

Since Tanev is hurt again, how does this really help the Leafs this year. Is an overpay for Ryan, but Canes are in playoff hunt, why would trade a regular for futures. Can't vision the Leafs wanted Hagelin and his contract next year, and what left wingers does he replace on the current Leaf roster.

Once again, Hagelin isn’t a contract dump. A contract dump would be someone who is totally worthless to every team and is on a huge contract. For example Matt Moulson. He is on one of the worst teams in the league and can’t even crack the line up, yet makes 5 million per year. Or Grabovski who is injured and won’t be playing but has a 5 million dollar contract. Hagelin has a use for teams. Especially teams that use speed and possession to drive offense.

ONCE AGAIN. . . . Hagelin is a winger, that couldn't play on any of the top 3 lines, likely all 4 lines of the Leafs, as we are loaded with wingers. (ABSOLUTELY NO VALUE) In addition, they added his 2 years and $8M contract to the deal to offset the Bozak cap hit. . . . .thus call it whatever you will. . . . ."IT'S A CAP/CONTRACT DUMP!!!!!

No it’s not a contract dump. Once again, he has value to the pens. Therefore, he isn’t a cap/contract dump. A contract dump is a contract that is worthless to all 31 teams. He would play on a lot of teams. So this would be a silly trade for the pens to make. They like both of the players that they are giving up and Leivo isn’t better than what they already have.

You are funny Pensfat, we all know that Hagelin still has value, especially to the Pens where he has a role. And you are right, he has performed at last, for a few games. Got himself up to 6 goals, 19 points.

But, he is a $4M cap hit next year. And the Pens are already expensive remember?
This offseason, around that expensive core, they have to try to re-sign or replace: Hornqvist, Rust, Rowney, Sheahan, Jarry, Kuhnhackl, Reaves, Oleksiak, Cole.
You had better believe Pittsburgh would consider moving him, and his under 30 points of production for 4 million. Can you see the "cap flexibility" smiles in their room after the trade?

Most of those guys will re-sign for cheap or will be replaced by cheaper internal options that are just as good.

Hornqvist only wants a 1.25 million increase to stay with the pens. It’s a matter of term with him. Sheahan at most will get exactly what he is making now. Rust will get a prove it bridge deal. Same with Jarry and Oleksiak. Reaves and Rowney will either re-sign for cheap (like close to league min) or be replaced by prospects. Kühnhackl will get maybe a very slight increase.
Even if the cap only goes up to 78 million, the pens can re-sign most of their players including Hornqvist and still be under the cap. Especially with the emergence of Simon and ZAR. Sprong and Blueger should be ready to go by next year. All of those guys are gonna be on contracts less than 750k
