Holtby, Carlson, Hoffman, Ryan, Nash

Created by: Eli
Team: 2017-18 Vegas Golden Knights
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 19, 2018
Published: Feb. 19, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Time to build up to the cap and win the Cup. John Carlson is fourth in scoring among defensemen, but better at defense than a couple of the guys in front of him. Holtby has won six or more playoff games in four of his last five playoff appearances. Why not just rely on Fleury? Well, since Holtby first made the playoffs in 2011, Holtby has 8 more playoff wins than Fleury, three more seasons with three or more wins than Fleury, and has established himself as 2nd all time in playoff save percentage. Fleury is 49th. No big difference, unless they want to beat the Pens in the finals, because Matt Murray is 6th, and did half the work in each of the last two wins. Fleury last won ten or more playoff games... well... just the once, in 2009. A cup takes 16. Fleury might still have it, but why waste a year of a great team to find out? Vegas doesn't want to give up too many picks, since they don't have any from 2016 or before, so they find creative ways to load up at the deadline, by taking guys at full salary that no other team would consider taking on. Brooks Orpik still plays like a physical #5 defenseman, but the remaining 5.5M on his contract is a liability that Vegas can afford better than Washington. This gives them leverage to get Carlson and Holtby for less than the normal cost of someone who is currently at the peak of their position. Bobby Ryan has $20 million left of cap hit. If that doesn't pay for Hoffman, maybe it pays for Erik Karlsson? But I think Vegas are happy with Hoffman and Nash up front, to upgrade what's already a very skilled group of forwards.

Additional Details:
Garrison is a cap dump, but so is Nash, earning 8M and on pace for 40 points instead of the 40 goals he gets some years. The rest of the guys above are rookie forwards or prospects. The Rangers say they want young players more than picks as they rebuild, so this should be a very tempting offer.

You can nickel and dime, and say it's unusual. Fine. But will New York get a better offer without having to retain salary, which would limit their ability to sell off other toxic assets like the contracts of Staal, Lundqvist, or Zuccarello?

More importantly, with the way Schmidt and Carlson are playing this year, and with two of the top fifty playoff goaltenders of all time, how many Cups would this team win?

I happen to agree, but just wanted to point out that Vegas could. How much more should Ottawa throw in to get rid of that albatross? I had Hoffman and Karlsson in a similar deal toget out from under it the other day, and got flamed by Ottawa fans. Thought I'd swing it the other way. Ryan might get close to thirty points this year... which is average.

Average for a guy who makes 7 million and for 5 more years.

Counter for the Nash and 2018 2nd
Garrison
Leipsic
Haula
Tuch
2020 5th

As well Garrison has one of those full no trade clauses so he would have to waive that just to be moved and he might not be willing to do so without it being to a playoff contender. I'm throwing in the 2nd because of the acquisition of Tuch and Haula. (Keep in mind that the Wild traded Tuch and a 3rd for Vegas to only select Haula so obviously theu didn't think highly of either player overall)

That's all we're getting for an elite goalie and #1 defenseman? Caps pass quicker than they should've passed on Erat for Forsberg

Holtby is 2nd all time in playoff save percentage and goals against average, and he has 8 more playoff wins since 2011 than Fleury. But the Caps' regular season team records for those categories are held by Grubauer, whom I think they re-sign, long-term, at 3M before making this deal. So the Caps only make that side of the deal if they're willing to gamble on a goalie two years younger, in order to save 3M in cap space at goalie, even before Holtby's next contract extension, when he'll get another raise.

Carlson plays 25 minutes a night of solid defense and is 4th in scoring among defensemen. He's a Norris candidate. His next contract could be 9M, like Subban, whom he's playing like this year. It could be less because some years he's merely a defensive stalwart and an iron man and a power play genius whose accurate one touch shots and no look one touch passes are just amazing.
.Colin Miller is three years younger, plays 18 minutes a night and change, and is 22nd in scoring among defensmen. He'll also be a UFA at the end of the year, but with only one solid year of work to stand on as a power play specialist, his next contract could be 4M per, with a reasonable term. He keeps the Caps power play credible while Madison Bowey develops into a long term solution at the right point.

Yeah. I thought my last draft was more fair, where I also threw the Caps Hyka, Suzuki, Schneider, and one pick in each round, instead of just a first. But a bunch of people said Vegas would pass. Maybe if I put the Holtby trade and the Carlson trade as separate deals, so it's easier to see the breakdown in value? Both guys are amazing, and would significantly help Vegas win a Cup this year.

Vegas doesn't want your draft pick and third line wing for their third line wing. They're a contender. If New York had the foresight to trade Nash for Tuch last summer, maybe they would still be in the playoffs. The Rangers are rebuilding because salaries like 8M a year for slightly above average but decently over thirty forwards like Rick Nash are not making sense to their ownership or management.

The idea that they would trade Haula at all is ridiculous. Watch some hockey, maybe?

I made a different version, and tried to keep a little more cap space to be able to re-sign Carlson and Grabner, and stay at the top of the league next year, after winning it all: https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/116339
