Description
Habs trade Pacioretty to NYI for one of their 1sts (whichever is in the 12-15 overall range) and draft a Center. I'm assuming one of Lundestrom or Veleno will still be available. They also get Nelson in the deal and sign him to a 4 year deal at $4mil aav. Both him and Danault can fight for the #2-3 C spot depending if they sign a UFA in the offseason. A little internal competition can't hurt.

Habs draft which ever top prospect with there pick (#1 Dahlin, #2 Tkachuk, #3 Zadina, #4 Svechnikov, #5 Bouchard, #6 Wahlstrom #7 Hayton) I skipped over Boqvist and Dobson not because they won't be drafted high, but because I don't see them going any higher than #6-7 and at that point I think Habs go for the best Center available, aka Wahlstrom or Hayton. The top 5, MTL should pick the best guy available, regardless of what position he plays. and other than Dahlin, #2-5 can be in any order.

The EDM trade is not exactly a trade I'm a fan of, as I believe Galchenyuk has the same offensive potential as RNH. but considering RNH is a legit Center and sadly Chucky is not... Habs add a legit goaltending prospect (although not their best...Lindgren is not for sell), and move down in the draft 10-15 spots giving EDM one of their low end 2nd rd picks and getting a high end 3rd rd pick. This fills EDM need for a winger, even on the RW as Chucky, for all his deficiencies at Center, he is an extremely versatile Winger. Habs get a legit #2 Center.. but that they'll probably trow in the #1 C spot if they can't sign one in free agency.

MTL overpays for a Center in free agency. They try and give every penny they have to Tavares...it doesn't work. So MTL end up giving $7mil AAV to Stastny, something probably no other team can or will offer him. Long term it's not the greatest plan, but with Bergefail probably feeling the pressure from Moulson this offseason to get the team back in the playoffs. I can see him doing this to save his skin.

Habs try and trade Schlemko...no takers, so they bury him in the Minors.

As you can see, there's not many changes to the defense... my reasoning for this is if MTL draft either Dahlin (fingers crossed) or Bouchard, I think they automatically take a spot right next to Weber on the 1st pairing (yes I know Bouchard is a righty, but I bet they make him play on his off wing all the same). If MTL draft a forward, MTL will then attempt to sign someone like DeHaan or maybe John Moore from NJD or Sbisa from VGK.

Sure, centers, but why is Danault on the 4th? Plus you've lost 2 scoring wingers, and added no top pairing LD... Sorry, but it doesn't look like this team is going to be any better.

I kind of agree. If you have RNH, Nelson and Danault as your top 3 C's, do you need to go get Stastny? or go get Stastny, but do not go after RNH. Danault would be an amazing 3rd line C. On defense we are not as bad as we were. A Healthy Weber returns. Could you place a Reilly paired with him. Put a Mete with a Juulsen. Once those two get a little more seasoned, you may have a very good pairing.

I like your explaining and thinking and the UFA's you might target.

As I explained for the defense, I left a spot open for if MTL draft Dahlin or Bouchard. as I think both those guys should be in MTL's top 4, if not already on the first pairing with Weber. If they don't draft them, then by all means, go sign a guy like DeHaan or Sbisa, etc. to try and improve.

As for center. I think the depth doesn't hurt at all. I'd agree Danault should go as the #3 C and I just orginized them in order of Salary. Nelson could move on the wing as he is doing in NYI, Danault goes #3 C. And if there are injuries during the season, they would have the depth to compensate instead of having to move up DLR or Froese up the lineup where they shouldn't be.

EDIT: I'll reorganize the lineup on how they should start the season with no injuries.

    cheers

I would also like to add to what @gm_jeanguy said. Sure we lost 2 scoring wingers. but MTL would still have cap space to add another winger (maybe Perron?). And as a Habs fan, If MTL somehow ever got all 3 of the guys i'm sugestin (Stastny, RNH, and Nelson) however unlikely as it is, and hear fans complain we'd have too many centers and not enough wingers...I'd lose my mind lol wingers are far more easier to acquire.

The Isles have no interest in Pacioretty. We have a log jam of scoring wingers in the NHL with Beau, Lee, Bailey, Eberle and Ladd and then Ho-Sang and Bellows when they presumably come up next year. Only 2 of those guys are rightys, theres literally no place for Pacioretty and I don't know why people insist he'd be a fit on the Islanders, especially at 30 (by next year) and needing to be paid at the end of the season. The last thing we need to do is lock up and aging player long term

valid points but Patch still has 5 more years in him at 30 goals per year proving he is on a legit 1st line. For the record, I would keep him in MTL but this is not the team I put together. I am only commenting on it.

I get that he still has productive years left, but on a team like the Isles we need our younger guys and their ELC's to make up for the terrible contracts Snow handed out. Plus the Isles first 2 lines just cant be broken up, they have arguably the best top-6 in the NHL right now, the chemistry is unreal between them. And then what are you gonna do, bury Pacioretty on the 3rd line while making $5+ million a year? I just can't see a fit and feel like most Montreal fans make this trade because they don't realize how good the Isles winger's have been this year.

Well no, if you believe your top six is set, then do not even look at Patch.
