The compensation on this would be two firsts, a second and a third rounder. Far too much.

If it's one thing Carolina has...it's cap space...and the need to use it on impact forwards. Paying Lindholm $6m might not be what they had in mind but I could see them matching.

Would be scarier if they offerered an $8m + offer sheet to a nylander....they either get the player or screw toronto cap wise (especially if, say, they are both in the running for Tavares)

although the habs need more legit Centres and not more of these winger/centre combos

Lindhom for $6 million is one first, one second and one third

Nope. It's the total value of the contract ($42M) divided by 5 years. That is how compensation is calculated.

Point is, if noone comes via free agency. and we can't get one thru trades, then why not get one via an offer sheet. Karlson and Lindholm are the top 2 and altought Karlssoon has the better season, it'S just that, 1 season while Lindholm is the safer bet albeit maybe with less upside.

The RFA compensation is designed to make it very undesirable for either the acquiring team (to give up all the draft picks) or the player (realistically limited to a 5-yr deal) to sign.

Can't the Habs (or any team) spend 6m better than Lindholm and keep it's picks? This summer there just might be any centres available to Montreal via UFAs.

teams shouldn't be afraid if a player of their's is offered sheeted. you gave the Nylander example. leafs would do well to the those four first rounders, some that might be lottery picks, and spend the seven million they have assigned to nylander or other players. the leafs may not like been having to give up nylander but the assets they get with picks and free cap space could surpass the value of nylander in time.
