det, edm unexpected trades

Created by: Eli
Team: 2018-19 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 9, 2018
Published: Apr. 9, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Edmonton gets a replacement for Maroon's net front presence and ability to tip in 30 easy goals, at a cap hit of negative 500k, and a total cost of negative seven million dollars. Detroit gets a replacement for Green on their power play. Just don't use him to kill penalties.
Trades
1.
BUF
  1. Hronek, Filip
Additional Details:
Det's recent 2nd round pick. Doing okay in the AHL.
DET
  1. Beaulieu, Nathan
Additional Details:
replacement for Green (great power play offense. Not a shutdown guy. Inexplicably used as a shutdown guy this year in Buffalo, Still has value)
2.
BUF
  1. Gryba, Eric
  2. Sekera, Andrej
Additional Details:
This deal saves Edmonton a bit over $7M in actual dollars, and creates a half million in cap space even before they decide whether to play Moulson or buy himi out.

Buffalo is much better with Sekera playing than Moulson in a press box. Gryba was an AHLer this year in Edmonton, but can bring some toughness and experience when Bogosian is injured. If Edmonton gets out of a year of paying 5.5M to a spare part, they can throw him in without batting an eyelash.
EDM
  1. Moulson, Matt
Additional Details:
Moulson has just two years left at 5M each. This year he was a healthy scratch (played only 144 minutes). Last year he had 11 power play goals. He only has two years left and the cap hit is a half million lower than Sekera's Edmonton also gets to dump Gryba to a team that might play him.

Why would Buffalo take on more cap for two more years? Not even close to worth it when we moulson's cap hit will stay under 4 mil when he's still in the ahl playing for the Ontario Reign (not in the press box).

Eli you got so excited that you actually figured out the labyrinth but you forgot to put any LW on the roster.

I knew you had it in you. The ROCK Eli is BACK & he is bigger and badder!!!!

I really love these two trades. I really think it works for Buffalo, Edmonton & Detroit.

I can only give you 4 Stars as you only have 14 players on the roster..... psyche you get 5 Stars from me!!!!

Det says no. Hronek will be better than Nathan very soon.

Appreciate the offer, would think Det is going to stay with the rebuild and the younger kids with higher upside.

wojme I see your point that we are picking up 2 years of additional salary with Sekera. I am willing to risk it as I do not believe that Sekera's 2017/2018 season is indicative of who he is as a player. He is the type of Dman that Housley is looking forward. I think it is really worth the risk.

Caps fan here. When we lose Carlson and sign Green, you should make an offer for Beaulieu. He might not cost Hronek, and he had 28 points two years ago in Montreal, at 25 years old. He'll keep Detroit's power play fun through the rebuild. Keep Hronek, whatever. Beaulieu in cheap, good, and in need of a change of scenes, and fills a need you're about to have.

Eli I have started to warm to the idea that my Sabres need to hang on to Beaulieu. If the litmus test was this season then most of the Sabres team should be traded away as most if not all were awful.

I think we have to trust Botterill & Housley in their judgement that they believed in Beaulieu enough to trade for him.

If we draft Dahlin/Boqvist they would most likely be in the lineup. other dmen with spots are risto, scandella, guhle, nelson, and McCabe. That's the top 6 with Bogo and Antipin. We have extensions coming up that we might need that 5.5 mil and would rather not spend it on another under performing dman.

I don't think Buffalo is going to build up to the cap next year. Maybe add a couple of guys and see if they help and keep evaluating to make big additions next year. If you add big UFAs when your team is at rock bottom, you have to massively overpay them. Win ten more games next year and cap space becomes valuable because people want to come over and play.

Point taken Wojme.... I am in the camp that Dahlin/Boqvist should not start with the Big Club. Let them develop similar to the plan taken with Guhle. I hope they resign Nelson. I actually think Guhle starts the year in Rochester as I think that Botterill may look to shield him from all the losing. Bogo ends up on the LTIR.

You are accurate that we do have extensions on the horizon. The way I see it is if Sekera produces like 2016/2017 & 2015/2016 then he is worth the money. If 2017/2018 is his new normal you bury him in Rochester.

Love the discussion!!!
