Description

I don't think the Hamonic fit has been good in Calgary, but he could be a very good fit beside a guy like Morgan Rielly in Toronto. My preference would be to move TJ Brodie back to the right side with Giordano, where he had his best years, then have Hamilton anchor a pairing with a natural left side defender, someone fairly cheap in UFA like Thomas Hickey.

I signed Hickey, Kulak and Pateryn to provide a bit of a buffer for injuries and the development of Andersson, Valimaki, Kylington and Fox over the next couple of years. If any of them exceed expectations and are ready to step in immediately, the older guys can play 3rd pairing or be healthy scratched if needed.

The return on Hamonic nets Calgary a young winger with good scoring upside (scored a ton in junior and the AHL) and two guys who haven't quite been able to crack the Leafs roster, but might be able to get in with Calgary.

In the bottom 6, it's time to stop playing the overpaid veterans who are too slow, and turn it over to the kids - Mangiapane, Jankowski, Foo, Dube, etc. There's tons of cap space to make a few veteran UFA one year signings if needed, but I don't think it's necessary.

If, and it's a big if, John Tavares becomes available, the Flames should be in heavily on him. If they do manage to sign him, some more significant moves can be made to accommodate, but I think it's unlikely they actually get him signed.

Why trade Hamonic?! He's not a big point-getter, but he was one of the most solid D-man last year and his current AAV is incredible. If we're going to trade a 3/4 d-man, Brodie has much more value.

I think Brodie's skating ability and offensive upside is a better fit for the style I'd like to see the Flames play. He has also played well with Giordano, and as incredible as Gio/Hamilton are together, I'd like to see them each run a pair so the top 4 is even better.

I think it's more likely that they move Brodie than Hamonic, but I would prefer to keep Brodie.

Agreed. Now I am a big Brodie guy so I may be biased but I am hesitant to move him. His game really regressed under Gulutzan and I would be very interested to see how he plays under a new coach. If he is still no good, then trade him I guess.

But I still think he's better suited to playing on the right side, and I don't think there's space to have Hamilton, Brodie, Hamonic and Andersson all on the right, so someone has to go (far less Stone). Maybe trading Andersson for Daniel Sprong or something like that is the way to go, but even at $3.875 per for Hamonic, that gets super expensive for a third pairing guy. I also think he has pretty high trade value to someone like the Leafs who are paper thin on the right side and a coach like Babcock who loves those gritty vets.

However, if you remember when Gio went down in the first playoff year, Brodie played the left side with Engelland and played well there (more evidence he and Gulutzan were not a fit). But I do like him on the right side better. I would do Andersson for Sprong, trading from a position of strength for a much needed RW. The one thing with Hamonic is that he is a character guy, which is something CGY desperately needs. The cap situation isn't too concerning for me since it is going up next year and the Flames top guys are locked in at very good cap hits. For the right offer (i.e. something similar to what we traded to NYI value wise) I would trade Hamonic.

Why not move one of the D prospects that won't crack the line up instead of Hamonic?
I like Leivo and Brown, but I think we can get them at a better price.

I think the prospects all have higher upside than Hamonic. We know exactly what he is, and he's good, but he's the kind of player who is going to have a hard time keeping up with the speed of the game in a couple of years. I'd prefer to have the younger, great skating, puck moving guys who can play the game the way it's going.
