Crazy Idea, BUT... MAYBE? (Toronto)

Created by: DwigtSchnute
Team: 2018-19 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 29, 2018
Published: Apr. 29, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Ottawa Receives: Leivo, Zaitsev, Johnsson, Carrick, 2019 1st round pick (TOR), Gurianov, 2019 1st round pick (DAL).

Dallas Receives: James Van Reimsdyk and Erik Karlsson.

Toronto Receives: Jason Spezza and John Klingberg.

I think this works for all teams, this gives dallas 2 players who can help a team in there prime right now. Ottawa gets 2 1rst's, a couple of B prospects, a RHD who can play much better than he did this year (he could be a steal in the trade if he can turn things around and find his form from his 1st season). Toronto gets a top pairing RHD without giving up one of Dermott, Lilgegren, Kapanen or any of "the big 3".

This might need tweaking but i think the core concept works.

I think Toronto wins this 3-way HANDS DOWN.

Can't give quantity to receive quality.

dallas loses big time. don't people know the concept of free agency. they don't have to give up anything to sign jvr. then they trade klinberg and more for just one year of karlsson.

Toronto and JVR did a sign and trade,
And how is Dallas losing big time? It isn't even but it's close to fair, Karlsson is hands down better than klingberg and trading spezzas contract is a bonus on top, not to mention that JVR is an upgrade over spezza. All of this for just a 1st and a decent prospect

As for what Ottawa is reviving, remove carrick and Leivo and add grundstrom and a 1st, Dallas could also be given a 3rd at least

You forget the could sign him but they have to compete for his signature. This way they don't, they just offer him a fair deal and settle it before free agency.

i didn't forget but the concept is so inane. karlsson wants competition for services. karlsson probably doesn't want a fair deal he wants a unfair deal in his favour. the concept of trading playing value for a upcoming ufa and assuming he can be signed is really....just not real.

klinberg is a good player on very nice contract, he isn't being traded for one year karlsson. don't know of any team that would trade their best dman with term for karlsson.

I honestly don't think any amount of "tweaking" will fix the fact that the core concept is flawed, and Toronto wins this *hands down* with no doubt at all.

JVR sign and trade is ridiculous. JVR is a UFA, so the only way he agrees on a new contract with trading rights to Dallas is if JVR is willing to go to Dallas to begin with (in which case, why would Dallas bother to lose Klingberg?)
I mean sure, Dallas gets a Karlsson one year rental, but that hardly makes any sense.
And OTT is just being dumped a bunch of decent-but-not-gamechanging players with nothing to help their reboot except a 1st which is TOP 10 PROTECTED (to boot!)

The trade at its core is flawed five ways to Sunday.

JVR isn't signing a contract that doesn't include at least a NTC (most likely also NMC), so forget sign and trade.

Just because you have a have a NTC/NMC doesn't mean you can't do a sign and trade, contracts are much more complicated than that, along with if he is traded before the new deal kicks in which is what im suggesting which would be before july 1, then there wouldn't be an NTC/NMC and he would then go to Dallas and the NTC/NMC would come into effect on JULY 1.

He (JVR) would agree to it if Dallas gets karlsson at the same time, he would be joining a team with a new identity that he would help build. That team would be scary as hell, and Karlsson for 1 year could be the difference between him choosing Dallas over other teams in free agency. Especially if they have a good year, he wants to get paid don't get me wrong but the cap is slated to go up to 78 minimum next year, and is projected to be at roughly 80 the year after. Once Seattle joins aswell that number will jump again, and soon his 12 mill deal wont seem as hard to swallow.

why does have seattle in the league raise the cap? the entry money to join the league isn't included in revenue sharing or the cap. I'm just guessing that jvr has no interest in joining the western conference with his connections to the new york area, and where he likes will sign.

There's a reason why the current cap when Vegas joined is expected to rise by a minimum of 3 million next year, and it's because that means there are 82 more games to make money off of, a new team to sell jerseys, and new fans watching games, which increases revenue for the league meaning the cap goes up.

are you saying the cap went up after expense revenue went up 6 per team....186m total which would mean 3m rise in cap per team yes there are 82 more games, but there is also one more team, so total revenue still has to shared over 32 teams. Yea the NHL revenue went partly due a 3% raise organically and some more do the Canadian dollar being stronger but the rise can't all be the result of Vegas.

Multiple reasons lead to the rise of the cap, but a new team coming in brings in a ton of revenue as well, but growth is the main factor you are right, vegas has a big hand in that tho, as well as the stronger canadian dollar, seattle itself joining doesn't automatically increase the cap but the new fans that will be watching will help to do that. Now that being said Vegas was a surprise this season and probably had more fans watching throughout the season then Seattle will, but still growth is growth.

That still makes no sense. If the whole premise of JVR accepting the sign-and-trade route instead of the free agency route is that Karlsson will be on Dallas, then doesn't it make more sense for Dallas to just trade Klingberg for Karlsson (which would be STUPID) directly, and then sign JVR?

The whole thing around JVR makes no sense. Think of it from HIS perspective, not what Toronto fans want. He holds the cards as a UFA.

Exactly. And, from Dallas' perspective, if the only way to get JVR is to give up assets, they'll take a hard pass on the opportunity and sign Neal or Kane instead.
