Leafs Can Afford to Sign JVR, Thorton and Green.

Created by: MapleLeafsfuture
Team: 2018-19 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 3, 2018

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Leafs can afford JVR...

JVR would be willing to sign a 4 year, 7 million dollar contract per year.

The leafs can't afford that.

However, they can pay JVR the same amount of money over the course of 4 years.

The leafs are going to have a ton of cap space this upcoming year.

The leafs could offer JVR:

A 1 year contract year contract for 7 million and a conditional 9 million if he signs an extension for 3 years at 4 million.

Meaning he would get paid:

1st year: 16 million
2nd year: 4 million
3rd year: 4 million
4th year: 4 million

He would get paid the same amount of money over the course of 4 years.

The leafs would be able to afford this and JVR would accept the same amount of money.

Note to Shanahan: Don't hire this guy as GM.

I know they're one year deals, but it doesnt make sense for the Leafs to get guys that are at the tail end of their careers to go on a cup run, which they have no chance of actually doing. Very stupid imho

JVR is coming off a career year, he’s not going to want to sign a 1 year deal. He’s going to want a 7 year big money deal in case of an injury or slump year.

So he signs a 1 yr $16m contract today with a handshake deal he signs a $4x3 contract on July 1st (or whenever)?

The NHL doesn't allow the conditional money in their contracts. (35+ contracts can have performance bonuses). This isn't quite cap circumvention, but it's close.

Cause they don't that have much cap room. When and where the bonuses performance are paid are the big issue. Don't see where the Leafs have space to sign their players coming off ELCs in 2019/20.
For practical purposes the Leafs have 11m for UFA signings in 2018/19, and probably short term UFAs. NHL rules don't allow these conditional contracts. Cap is the same per year for the life of the contract.
