There's not a lot of hope that Jones will cut it at the NHL. He's a dumb as rocks and his skating just isn't there. So you're really just trading Max for two picks, the later of which might actually be pretty good if the Ducks can't figure out how to get younger/faster in the next season or two. So it doesn't help the Habs this season, but it's a solid investment in the long-term future.

First off, this puts the team into cap hell, making them unable to resign Henrique, Gibby, Montour, Silfverberg, etc.

I'd like to point out how you've guys have valued Patches so far:

NHL ready prospect + 1st + another prospect.
2nd line centre + 1st + prospect
Top D prospect, + first + roster player.

etc. etc. etc.

Now you want 3 first round picks (Jones was 24th OA)?

No thanks.

If any GM was dumb enough to make a move like this, it would have happened at the deadline. Unfortunately for you guys, it didn't, and his value has dropped since then.

There's as much or more hope for Jones as there is for McCarron, and you guys seem to value him pretty highly.

No one's putting much value on either, I'm afraid. Both would have been great players 10 years ago, but the move to mighty-mite shinny has taken the big guys out.

jones is gonna be a bust no one values mccarron and 1 bad season that is comparable to nugent hopkins best He has almost hit 40 goals 3 times in the last 4. It is a bit of an overpayment but not that huge

The thing is he had a bad season when he was the go to guy getting all the minutes and PP time. Every player that has retired will tell you that one day you wake up and it’s gone, the legs, the shot, the twitch muscle response is slower. Some players have it until 30 and some until 35 or whatever. But as patches has had serious injury in years past and is now 30, GM’s have to be careful not to get tied up into something like this.
Can he bounce back and prove it was just a down season? Sure he can, but will he? No one knows.
Teams are not paying so much value for what he is right now which is a 30 year old 17 goal winger.

Your logic is like saying Plekanec is still a second line scoring center because he was a couple years ago...

patch is better than pleky was. Pleky is also 6 years older patch is 29. Plus yes he will especially if he plays with getzlaf and rakell

The facts are still facts. I understand he was a favourite and people admire him but that doesn’t affect value and what other people outside the organization see. Plus you can’t say for certain he rebounds the same way I can’t say he won’t rebound... it’s because reading tea leaves and crystal balls are bs.
You can look at all these posts with Patches being traded and you’ll see over and over its the same discussions to be had. Nobody is willing to value Pacioretty the way some of his fans do.

@Truebeliever, you also said "you're really just trading Max for two picks, the later of which might actually be pretty good if the Ducks can't figure out how to get younger/faster in the next season or two.".

Here's a great way to get younger and quicker-keep the two first rounders and Jones, and continue to draft extremely well, just as the team has done for the past 5+ years.

I would assume patches gets moved at the tdl to a legit contender for about half of the value proposed here. A 1st and a B prospect or a 2nd and an A prospect. ANA isnt a legit contender next year.

I can't disagree, though Ritchie and Jones are looking like wasted picks. Steel, on the other hand, looks like he should have been top 10.

He'll probably start the season in the AHL and slowly work his way into the lineup as the season goes on.

Depends on how healthy they are. Getzy was hurt for 25+ Games and then returned to put up more than a point per game, Kesler was out for half the season and was clearly less than 100% for the rest of it, Perry was hurt, Rakell was hurt, Gibby was hurt, Hampus was hurt, Fowler was hurt. They had the most man games lost to injury this season, ran Kevin Roy out there as their #1 center for a month, and somehow scraped their way into the playoffs in a much tougher conference. If they can stay healthy, they're a contender.

Which position is Steel gonna play with the Ducks?

I think Getzlaf, Kesler, and Perry will be their biggest issue. Theyre only getting older
