Description
Let's start with the offense. The changes that needed to be made are pretty clear. I would like to sign a player like JVR, Neal, Perron etc. but its hard to say if any of these players would be the ideal solution at left wing for the money it will cost in free agency. I also think it will be difficult to attract these players to Buffalo right now. Instead i think the better solution is to make a trade for Nick Foligno, Boone Jenner, and Sonny Milano. I am looking for criticism here Columbus fans so be vocal let me know what i can do to improve this deal or if it works. i do believe it works well for both sides in principle. Columbus needs a steady two way center on the second line. In addition, Columbus will also need young versatile player like Jenner but more cost controlled like Baptiste currently is. Nylander replaces the prospect loss of Milano on the left side. As for Foligno i believe he would wave his NTC and play in Buffalo given that both his father and brother played in played for the team.On the other side it is fairly obvious that Buffalo needs left wingers. In comes Foligno and Jenner. In addition, Milano adds some level of depth to the Sabres system. I have the expectation that Mittelstadt will be ready to take the second center position if he is not then Jenner can start there and Mittelstadt can pick it up when he is ready.

On the defensive side Buffalo will improve just by having Dahlin on the team almost immediately. Pilut will probably start the year in Rochester but will have an opportunity to move up. I am sure Buffalo will try to find another defenseman for the third line but at the moment that is inconsequential. Buffalo will need to give opportunities to players like Nelson, Guhle, Pilut, and McCabe to see who steps up. If none of these players step up look for a major shift next year.

The goalie situation needs attention. I watched and gave Lehner a chance i am no longer willing to do that so i went out into free agency and took a chance on Bernier to see what he could do. If he pans out then we can re-up his contract. Ullmark is not ready his play at the end of the season as well as in Rochester towards the end of the year made that clear.

I like it but don't know if Columbus would want to trade their captain. Think the return is missing a mid round draft pick but fair nonetheless. Also like the two year prove-it deal for Sam but would think he's more like a 3 mill cap hit.

I think this makes a lot of sense both ways but I do agree trading foligno would be a smart move on paper, hard to make in the locker room and city. I think doing this from CBJ perspective would be interesting. What is the deal on Nylander? Feels like BUF fans have given up on him and want to move him after all of 7 NHL games

Nylander wont be ready for a few more years and its pretty discouraging for most Buffalo fans. He will develop eventually into a decent winger but Buffalo needs more now.

Five stars for trading O'Reilly.
I have seen this trade before, I liked it then and I like it now. Milano and Jenner could easily be top 6 forwards and Foligno, he will make his presence known on the ice one way or another.

If you were to retain on ROR then I'd say yes but we can't afford to keep ROR and resign Bob, Panarin, Werenski and others.... we also have Wennberg as the second line center and he had a down year and shoulo=d be better next year, also I don't think we trade our captain unless we are planing a rebiuld...... Honestly I don't think ROR would do well in Columbus...... but the value is fair.

The only concern i have about O'Reiley in Columbus is his skating speed. Its kinda funny you mention salary retention i figure that might be an issue but i thought that if I took on Foligno and Jenner's contract then that would be enough but i definitely understand. I don't think giving up the captain signals a rebuild i think its more of a retool. Is Foligno really that much of a cornerstone in that franchise?
