Winnipeg getting a 1st rounder and managing the CAP for the future

Created by: TotheNorth
Team: 2018-19 Winnipeg Jets
Initial Creation Date: May 28, 2018
Published: May 29, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
EDM allowed to speak to Myers regarding an extension. Allows EDM to get better now in terms of Depth, as well as a RHD they need without giving up young talent.
WPG will select best available RHD at #10 to potentially replace BUF in 3 years.
Every other deal is about moving out salary without having to give up to much to move it. ARZ uses their cap space to get a high pick in exchange for taking Kulikov for 2 years.
NYI takes a flier on Mason for 1 year to contend for the #1 spot in a contract year which could be his final contract. He had a rough year last year but posted decent numbers (if you remove the first 4 games he played). The cost for NYI is nothing so worth the shot.

Lines keep the top 6 in tact, add Vesalainen to be the scorer with Perrault and Little and move Ros down to the 4th to add a speed/scoring touch to replace Tanevs "speed without scoring touch".

D-pairings shelter Niku with Buff, and Poolman with Hickey to balance out the core while Morrisey-Trouba get all the hard matchups.

PPs split up Laine and Buff to have two scoring elements separated to make the 2nd unit more effective.

    I like it.
My only criticism would be moving Nic Petan as opposed to Armia. 10th OA isn't worth a top 4Dman and PP QB (on any team not named the Jets or Preds), and an established two way forward who is arguably the best defensive forward not in our top 6 (debatable).

Also, we have plenty of good Left shots in the system (Vesalainen, Lemieux, Petan, Seuss) but not many good right shots coming up from the farm. (Only Appleton, and maybe Spacek.) Armia's specifically valuable to us for depth in a way that Petan, Seuss, and Lemieux aren't.

    Please WPG fans...
you are not getting the 10OA pick for Myers, even with spare parts included.
    1. He has 1 year left. Even if there is “an extension” he’s not taking a pay cut from his 5.5M salary. EDM would be better off cutting cap elsewhere and going after Carlson and saving 10OA
    2. You basically need to get rid of him... everyone knows that WPG is in a cap crunch. You aren’t getting “full price” because other GMs will call your bluff
    3. Myers has been an inconsistent player and managed to shine as a 4/5th D on a good team. What team would move 10OA for that?

You might be able to get a lottery protected 2019 1st and a B prospect plus a late pick. 10OA in a deep draft? No way.
EDM is better off trading up for Bouchard.

You guys should have likely fired Chiarelli if that's the kind of rational radical thinking you were after! Realistically I think this deal is something he'd bite on fast based on his comments in interviews

I’m actually not an Edmonton fan. I’m a third party. If Chiarelli plans to move 10OA it better be for a D with some term. Justin Faulk comes to mind.

Faulk has 1 extra year...but modified the trade to make it more secure from EDM point of view due to your input

Myers would make really good acquisition for Oiler, they should absolutely target him but I don't think they should move the 10OA.

One thing to keep in mind is GM's make moves to save their butts all the time. Would it be a smart move? IMO not for the long haul no but in the short term? Absolutely. Just because Myers is a UFA in a year doesn't mean they can't get a deal done July 1st. Chiarelli is known for making some pretty questionable moves but this would be just another nail in an almost fully closed off coffin. If the owner doesn't fight him on it, he may move that 10th pick for immediate dividends. Maybe not Myers but not going to be a Doughty or Karlsson either.

Yeah it's weird. Lots of Jet fans seem to think Myers is a guy teams covet and is the guy who will get moved. Sorry but Trouba is the guy on his way out.

Here’s the question... wouldn’t EDM be better off using the a lower pick to bribe a team to take on Sekeras (both?) contract, and use that space to go after John Carlson who will prob land around 7.5-8M AAV rather than spend 10OA on Myers and extend him for 6.5-7M?

Better player, more consistent, only a million more, keep 10OA. Hence why Myers is not worth 10.

I just love when ppl on this site trade rentals, they say “oh yeah this guy is great definitely worth this package” and then when the idea of re-signing the guy, he’s a bum that will agree to a short term team friendly contract instead of hitting the market. Can’t have it both ways.

And what if Carlson says "i want to stay in the States?" Or if Wash re-signs him before Edm gets the chance to try? That doesn't help Chiarelli either. And if you package Sekera with the 1st, that isn't getting you a top end player either. Sekera's value isn't that hot right now. Plus he has a NMC.

Like i said I don't think Myers is worth the 10OA but is it impossible? I don't think so. Chiarelli needs to get this team a damn RHD and by doing this he doesn't have to give up Nuge or Klefbom. The 10th is probably not going to be NHL ready before Chiarelli is most probably fired so what's his incentive to keep it?

If there are better options, then by all means but if comes down this being their best offer, I sincerely think he takes it. It could help keep his job for a little while longer.

Marc Bergevin is in the same boat btw. I fully expect him to make a couple bandaid deals to repair the D core and get a couple past their prime centermen and say "Voila, we're a playoff team again because I solved all our problems."
