The caps are kind of screwed with Phillip Grubauer.
1st-young mostly unproved goalies have little value.
2nd-every team in the league knows that the caps are up against the cap and have players to re-sign .
3rd- every team also knows that Phillip Grubauer is likely out in Washington do to the young Russian kid they drafted Samsonov.

Whether or not you like Wilson has nothing to do with what he gets paid. He'll get that or more in my opinion. Also, Carlson was not saying no to a contract offer from a Stanley cup winning team when he said it. My guess is his perspective has changed and he'll take a home town discount. But even if he doesn't they can easily shuffle a piece or two around and sign him for seven or eight million a year.
Also totally disagree on Grubauer: the Caps will get a good return for him.

More than 3.5 for Tom Wilson? not a chance. he's a good player, but he had 35 points playing with Ovi and Kuzy for most of the season. Don't get me wrong, I know that his role on the team is more than just point producer, but its also a role that doesn't lend itself well to big contracts. I think Zack Smith's contract is a good reference point.

Maybe Carlson is going someplace. He can afford a bigger house in Washington. Like your signings and your trades. (maybe not Grabner) Regarding Wilson. Shaw gets 3.9m from the Habs as RFA, Clutterbuck 3.5m, Wilson is a bargain at 3.5m
