Everybody Loves a 3 way (trade)

Created by: brian123
Team: 2016-17 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 24, 2016
Published: Mar. 25, 2016
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
IMHO if the draft picks (not named Matthews) pan out than Toronto is the clear winner here, if they do not pan out than Toronto probably loses these trades. Strome and Marner can dominate the OHL for one more year.

If the leafs pull this off it would definitely be a great situation for all teams.

Dont forget to add Duclair, Domi and Arizona's 2017 1st rounder......come on you got to get fair value for Michalek..................rolling eyes

Yotes won't trade Ekman-Larsson for Mathews straight up. You want them to add Strome and their first rounder and all you got to do is add Gardiner and Michalek??? Come on man.....

That trade with Phoenix would be highway robbery.

Goes without saying that the Yotes trade is ridiculous. The Oilers trade is also terrible. Hall is a top 5 LW in the league and OEL is a top 10 Dman, they would have similar value but due to position the Oilers may have to add something, that something would not be a top 5 pick. Why would the Oilers want all of your RFAs? Kadri is good but would be at best our 3rd best C. Unless his ask is ridiculous it would be a mistake to lose him, you need some experienced guys that can legitimately play to soften the minutes for your young guys.

So much leaf hate ..... if you compare the Warrior chart between Gardiner and OEL on http://ownthepuck.blogspot.ca/ you will see they are practically the same player. OEL is more productive because he gets more icetime. In most advanced stats, Gardiner owns him, and that's historically playing with Phaneuf and Franson. The only reason I consider OEL more valuable is because is younger. The delta between OEL and Gardiner if offset by the predicted delta between Matthews and Strome. If Michalek has a good year he can be traded at the deadline for a 2nd or 3rd. Like I said, Leafs only win the trade if the draft pick (currently shown to be Olli Juolevi on draftsite.com/nhl/mock-draft/2016/) pans out. If hes a bust Arizona wins that trade.

As a Leafs fan, I agree that Gardiner is under-rated. But even if we say the difference between OEL and Gardiner is equivalent to the projected difference between Matthews and Strome, the trade becomes Michalek for a top 10 pick.

Actually the Phoenix trade, I think is quite fair. Don't know if the Leafs would even do it if Matthews is that good (just under McDavid's potential). But Brian, when you include two guys who might even get qualifying offers, Holland & Percy, yikes, that trade can't be serious. So Oilers would get OEL (3 years then UFA) and Kadri (2 years then UFA) for Hall (4 years) and top five pick.....that's why Alberta hates Ontario.

Regarding the first overall pick....Who ever gets it will be receiving offers from Arizona. If it is a trade, be interesting what it is. IMO Strome and 1st (7th overall) and probably a bit more for Matthews.

Regarding the Arizona trade I feel the extra top 10 pick coming back to Toronto is justified because the hype and revenue generated by having Matthews would be unprecedented. Kind of like stamkos to toronto.

Regarding the Edmonton trade, hockeybuzz is suggesting taylor hall for a top pairing d and a gritty established center. Is kadri established? Maybe / maybe not but when compared directly to the nuge (same website as above) Kadri blows him away. How highly do oiler fans think of the nuge? Kadris stats at 22 were equivalent. Kadri is a good player. The only reason I have him included in this trade is because he is expendable due to Stamkos in my scenario. Percy goes back as a defensive body for taking fayne, not sure what the hate on the guy is besides his salary but I noticed most oiler gms are trying to dump the guy and toronto has a need for an experienced rhd. Holland is a depth LW being sent back due to loss of LW hall. Everything considered I think its reasonable to trade first round pics (edmontons for pittsburghs) as well. Edmonton is getting a defenseman whos name has been mentioned in Norris conversations, a centre whose advanced stats are superior to the nuges and they also eliminate faynes salary and term.

Arizona isnt going to trade their best player just because Mathews is from there, he will be very good but they are loaded with young offensive talent prospects( including Domi and Duclair) but have very little on the way in terms of defence. Trading OEL basically puts them in Oiler territory, no balance. To suggest that Gardiner is basically the same level as OEL is just wrong. Gardiner isn't even your best Dman and OEL is better than Riley. No hate because Riley is a stud and I would take him any day on my team but he isn't on OELs level, at least not yet.

The Leafs have some very good building blocks IMO, if supported with capable vets they can build something very special, it will take time though
