Why would Karlsson sign in order to be traded to Vegas... costing that team Tartar, Reinhart, two 1sts and Theodore RFA rights?
Why would he not just wait until 7/1 and cost Vegas nothing? The first option makes his new team "worse" before he even gets to town.
Close. But this argument makes you look so much smarter when you use it to shut down trades for John Carlson, who might actually be a UFA on July 1st, 2018, not '19 like Karlsson, who has told the press he doesn't want to give Ottawa a hometown discount, and whose wife has told the press a teammate's fiance sent her awful, horrible, harrassing text messages. Erik Karlsson is happy to get a fresh start. This might be a massive overpayment, but it's probably about what Ottawa is charging, and it's not like Vegas are short on brilliantly talented defensemen, or like Tatar did anything in the playoffs this year.

I think Vegas is a good landing spot for Karlsson, but considering the picks are into the future I think you need to do better on the player side
Erik Karlsson, at 26, has 6 goals (2 GWG) and 31 assists in 48 playoff games. Shea Theodore at 22 has 5 goals (1GWG) and 13 assists in 40 playoff games. Tatar has scored twenty goals in each of the last four seasons. I think this is not too bad, value-wise, for a one year rental of an offensive ace, but Vegas certainly could chip in a couple of their role players/fringe guys to help Ottawa change its culture and try to bounce back this year. Who knows what Carrier, Nosek, or Merrill develop into, but adding a bunch of guys who just rode along for the finals could change the culture in Ottawa's locker room.
