I think Vegas is a good landing spot for Karlsson, but considering the picks are into the future I think you need to do better on the player side

Why would Karlsson sign in order to be traded to Vegas... costing that team Tartar, Reinhart, two 1sts and Theodore RFA rights?

Why would he not just wait until 7/1 and cost Vegas nothing? The first option makes his new team "worse" before he even gets to town.

Because then Ottawa would have the chance to send him elsewhere

Change the 2020 pick to 2018, and take out Reinhart for Suzuki.

Ottawa can send him where every they want... It is just illogical for Karlsson (his point of view) to sign to be traded for a big return.

He is signed through this year, doesn’t become a UFA until 7/1/19. Until Ottawa controls him.

Close. But this argument makes you look so much smarter when you use it to shut down trades for John Carlson, who might actually be a UFA on July 1st, 2018, not '19 like Karlsson, who has told the press he doesn't want to give Ottawa a hometown discount, and whose wife has told the press a teammate's fiance sent her awful, horrible, harrassing text messages. Erik Karlsson is happy to get a fresh start. This might be a massive overpayment, but it's probably about what Ottawa is charging, and it's not like Vegas are short on brilliantly talented defensemen, or like Tatar did anything in the playoffs this year.

Erik Karlsson, at 26, has 6 goals (2 GWG) and 31 assists in 48 playoff games. Shea Theodore at 22 has 5 goals (1GWG) and 13 assists in 40 playoff games. Tatar has scored twenty goals in each of the last four seasons. I think this is not too bad, value-wise, for a one year rental of an offensive ace, but Vegas certainly could chip in a couple of their role players/fringe guys to help Ottawa change its culture and try to bounce back this year. Who knows what Carrier, Nosek, or Merrill develop into, but adding a bunch of guys who just rode along for the finals could change the culture in Ottawa's locker room.

pretty sure the 2018 pick belongs to DET from the tatar pick. I don't really want to see a roster player / pick in a Vegas trade. Give me the farm; Glass & Suzuki are a top 10-12 talent in pretty much any draft class who put up a 100pt draft +1 years and will likely turn into good top 6 players and both would non-starters in this trade. Then two or all 3 of Brannstrom; could turn into a good player, harder to judge now but it's always good to see a 17-18 year old playing in the SHL, Hague; likely a 2nd round pick due to his size like when the sens drafted Gagne. Would take a couple years to see how he progresses but seeing 35g 78pt in draft +1 is a great jump from his draft year, Coghlan; went undrafted but put up respectable numbers last year and could jump right into an AHL spot with the Bsens and we need the RHD depth if Karlsson leaves. You win today, I might win tomorrow.

I would definitely agree with your approach of "give me the farm". That being said, for Erik Karlsson, i don't want 6-7 guys that add up to around his value, I want 1-2 that are going to be bonafide NHL studs. This is the best defenceman in the world we are talking about, with another year left on his contract. Whoever trades for him is 95% certain they will be locking him down for the next 8 years, which the Sens brass should know. Personally, I really like the Avalanche in a Karlsson trade, but understand they likely won't be the ones going after him. If it's Vegas, I am walking away with at least Suzuki or Glass, a 2019 1st, a mid-range prospect and an under-24 roster player. Otherwise, I'm looking elsewhere. But, that's just how I would approach the situation. We'll likely trade him to the division rival Leafs for Matt Martin and watch him win the cup for 8 consecutive years in front of our face....Because, Ottawa.

Essentially I am congratulating McPhee on he's selections and scouting from last year's first two rounds plus a undrafted signing for Karlsson. Sens get a good set of prospects and wait 2-3 years to add them to Brown, White, Chaplik, Batherson, Luchuk, Formenton, Gagne, Chabot, Jaros, Sturtz, and 2018 4th overall already in the org.

Right MM initials. NHL Toronto media would have the best day of their life if they got to break a Marner, Lilegren, Johnsson trade for Karlsson.

I look at it the same way as you, if I am losing 60-70points I would prefer a "hockey trade" with 60-70pts coming back the other way. I was just replying specifically to a Vegas trade. I would pass on Theodore, Miller, McNabb for the 3 other prospects instead of those guys. I'd much rather see Draisatl (who would never be included, 'cept Charelli) or RNH kind of EDM trade. I don't see Carolina or MTL having interest in moving their 2nd/3rd overalls in a Karlsson trade but that would hit the bonafide star I would want back. Get a 18 year old star for a 28 year old one, makes sense to me.

Still wish we could just start the year with Karlsson, Hoffman, Chabot, Duchene, Stone as the top 5/core and bring back positive sens media focused on the play of the 4th overall, how White/Brown start the year and any of the litter of youth breaking into the line up. Like normal offseason stuff

I feel like we should be in charge in Ottawa. You don't have a couple hundred million to help get Eugene out of town do you?

I couldn't agree more. This team is not as bad as they were this past year. nor are they as good as being one goal away from the Stanley cup final two years ago. They are what I have known them to be; a team that sits on the fringe of the playoffs year after year, sometimes in, sometimes out, and always picks around the middle of the first round. We finally have a chance to do something, and the media is ruining that chance (cue Heatley, Spezza, Chara flashbacks). The next week or two are going to define what this franchise looks like over the next decade. I sure hope it looks alright!
