ROR is nice, but for 7.5m you can get better value in a UFA centre or Dman (maybe not this year) and keep all those trade assets. Still Buffalo could get more from a team desperate for a centre. What's the fascination about trading Mcillerney for nothing?

I don't know if it's true, but I've heard teams will often ask their starter who they're comfortable with as a backup...so i wonder if Leaf brass would ask Freddy if he's comfortable with Sparks or would rather keep McElhinney.

I don't think they would put Freddy "on the spot" to decide. My thought is that Leafs will want to have Sparks as backup this season. They have to know if he NHL good. As a result Mcilerney will be waived. Now being waived doesn't mean he will be claimed. If he is claimed, that team has to keep on their NHL roster....or he goes on waivers again and if no claims, the Leafs can reclaim him....and send him to the minors without waivers. I just think trading him for 4th rounder is so wasteful. Rather take the chance that he not claimed, rather than trade him for a meaningless 4th rounder.
In his heart Freddie wants Mcillerney as his backup, but long term, Sparks or someone else is going the second goalie.
