3 way trade w/ TOR and CAR

Created by: TanSor
Team: 2018-19 Minnesota Wild
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 28, 2018
Published: Jun. 28, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Had a conversation with some Leafs fans earlier, they think Spurgeon would be a good fit for TOR (and I agree). I tried to fit every team's needs into this, please let me know if a trade is unfair and what I would have to add to make it more fair.

Here's the breakdown of the trade for what each teams gives up and receives:

Toronto receives: Spurgeon
Toronto gives up: Gardiner, Kapanen
Toronto gets a top pairing RHD that is a very good shot blocker, effective PK'er, and a great skater.

Minnesota receives: Faulk, Kapanen, Zykov, Gauthier
Minnesota gives up: Spurgeon, Nino
Minnesota replenishes their bare prospect cupboard (particularly forwards) and get a replacement for Spurgeon.

Carolina receives: Gardiner, Nino
Carolina gives up: Faulk, Zykov, Gauthier
Carolina gets a solid top 4 D that can play PP minutes with newly acquired Dougie Hamilton. They also get a top 6 scoring forward.

For my 4th line signings you can replace them with anyone. We still have almost $1M in cap with a 27 man roster (a lot of these guys would be playing in Iowa, I just included them to show our depth).

I have no idea if the Leafs part of the deal goes through or not, what I do know is Spurgeon would be a good addition for the Leafs, although Kapanen is a very good player that still has a lot of untapped potential, I'm thinking TO would try to move a different guy, like Jeremy Bracco or someone from the Marlies.

The problem is that I don't think the Wild would take a guy like Bracco, we are already a pretty undersized team. The Leafs top 6 RW would be solidified with Nylander and Marner already playing there (especially if they land Tavares). Nylander could be their 3C if they didn't get Tavares, but I feel that's kind of wasting his talent.

Not a fan of any of the three teams involved, so from an impartial bystander point of view, that looks like one of the most fair deals I've seen proposed on here. Everyone gets what they need while giving from an area of strength. Great idea.

Thank you! I thought about this for a very long time, probably more than any other post I've made. It means a lot hearing this is a good idea from an unbiased view point. I would be pretty happy if this actually happened.

If they don't get Tavares, I highly doubt they move Kapanen. He's a guy that could still develop into a 30 goal and 60 point guy and those are valuable assets. Giving up that kind of potential and also trading Gardiner, who while he has his issues is definitely a top 4 defencemen on many teams, for just Spurgeon seems a tad too steep. Although I must admit, I have a big bias towards Kapanen. I love the kid.

It seems as if everything happening in the league right now is depending on what happens to Tavares, lol. I agree, though, Toronto probably doesn't move Kapanen if they land Tavares but maybe for a player like Spurgeon. Spurgeon is no slouch, he averaged over 24 minutes per game the last two seasons (which is over 2 more minutes per game than Gardiner, that's a whole penalty). You're essentially trading a top 4 LHD and a promising prospect (nothing is for sure in this league, he could be a 60 point guy or he could be a bust, he does have potential though) for a 1st pairing RHD that plays big minutes and can shut down the league's best. I would rank Spurgeon as a better player than Gardiner, and Kapanen maybe makes the trade tip slightly in Minesota's favor. What if the Wild added someone like Gustav Olofsson? He's a fine bottom pairing LHD that has potential to become a 2nd pairing defensive specialist. He would help out on the PK, too.

I’m struggling to see why Carolina would do this deal.

In all likelihood your trade would go through without a hitch. It would be tough for Kapanen to move up in the lineup. Especially if the Leafs land JT since Nylander, Marner and possibly Brown are all ahead of Kapanen on the depth chart. The lineups I've toyed with I put Kapanen up into the 3rd RW spot to play with Either Tavares or Kadri and Johnsson on the other side. Its just sick speed on the wings with a creative centre that gives matchup fits to other coaches.

But the more I read about Spurgeon the more I like him. Still think the Leafs need a guy like Chris Tanev a little more than Spurgeon but still I would not at all be disappointed if they get him.

I was under the impression Carolina needed a top 6 LW/RW who can score. They get that in Niederreiter, who is a big possesional guy that was injured all of last season despite playing 60 games and was on pace for 23 goals while injured. They also gain a top 4 LHD, which is something I've seen a lot of Carolina armchair teams acquire. You already have Slavin who is very talented shut-down defenseman and PK specialist. Pesce is a solid 2-way guy, and Hamilton is an offensive defenseman. They'd get more offensive help in their back end and PP help with Gardiner.

The challenge with a guy like Tanev is he's very much a defense first without a lot of puck moving ability. If the Leafs are going to have such a talented group of forwards, they'd be better off with a guy who can get the puck up to them quickly and jump in the rush as a 4th attacker better than Tanev does.

And this is exactly what Spurgeon can do. I'd define Spurgeon as a really good two-way defenseman. He can contribute offensively/carry the puck/make stretch passes while also being very defensively responsible. I'd say this description by TSN sums him up pretty well:

I don't doubt that, however, he is 5'9" and weighs 175 lbs, he can get pushed around by bigger players in front of the net. Again I wouldn't at all be against Spurgeon, I'd welcome him, but if the Leafs can get Myers or Tanev for less? Its just a more valuable move.

You’ll have to remove Zykov from the deal for Carolina to take it.

How are you valuing this trade? I look at it like this: Nino for Faulk and Gardiner for Zykov and Gauthier. If I took out Zykov, it would be straight up Gardiner for Gauthier which would be very unfair

Then you’ll have to find another partner. You obviously know Zykov’s upside since you’ve given him 2.3M. He’s a goal scorer and that is what Carolina needs.

Canes would be better off trading Faulk in a deal for a LHD and picks or a goalie.

I just based his salary off of what other Carolina fans used but yes he's PROJECTED to be a goal scorer (nothing is a sure thing in the NHL), where as Nino is a proven goal scorer. You are getting a LHD here, Gardiner is a solid top 4 LHD.
