Only way that Bergevin is the star of the day is if he retires.

I wonder how Bergevin will erode the Canadiens further this offseason.

It's a very good roster.

To get Tavares to go to a team he's publicly announced he is least interested in, you'll have to actually outbid all the other teams that need him just as badly. So maybe send Alzner and a 1st to anyone that wants a draft pick, and offer 15x7 to change his mind?

Of course, then you're left with a PR nightmare of selling seven years of a team headlined by someone who just publicly insulted it. There will always be hockey fans in Montreal, but will they stick with the team through tough times if the best player is someone who says he hates Montreal? Past personnel moves that have focused on signing French Canadian guys say to me that the fans care about identity more than winning. Pacioretty has been an exception, but signing a Toronto native, lifelong Leafs fan after he publicly says he would not want to play in Montreal would be a step too far.

Better to wait a year, try and develop centers from the draft, and still, certainly trade for O'Reilly, at that price, if Buffalo accepts. MTL have a lot of good center prospects, and could maybe sign a 2nd tier UFA to fill a few minutes, and still have cap space and the ability to move prospects up as they earn ice time.

Bergavin will never be the star of the day as I expect him to make another ilrelevant UFA signing today to help sell season tickets. He has created a total mess and a team that is weak at centre ice and defence.
